  • [Pictures] Indiana Jones at the Discovery Science Center

Had a chance to check out the "Indiana Jones and the Adventure of Archaeology" traveling exhibit at the Discovery Science Center in Santa Ana, CA. The main exhibit area features props, costumes, and artwork from all four films. From the main exhibit area, four separate rooms branch out which attempt to educate regarding what real life archaeology is all about using actual artifacts and photographs. Growing up with Star Wars and Indy I've always liked Raiders a bit more, so this exhibit was a total blast for me. I took pictures of pretty much every single Indy display, so here are some of them (I've posted a lot, so if you're planning to go and want to be surprised, don't read any further!):

Everyone gets their own handheld multimedia guide with headphones that allows you to see video or hear audio providing additional info regarding the various physical displays. There's a lot of cool making-of kind of stuff, as well as explanation of what in the films are considered factual versus myth or just plain invented for the plots.

It wasn't clear to me if this was one of the actual miniatures used to film the mine car chase or if it was just a model.

I may not have cared much for the ending, but I have to admit this prop was really impressive.

The first room about real life archaeology includes an interesting discussion of what is treasure. This display asks why an ordinary necklace of everyday shells from thousands of years ago is treasure when compared to a diamond.

Love the pictures! I went to see this exhibit but having a 4 & 6 yr old with me didn't really allow for me to enjoy the props or even get through them all. More like race through them!

Re: Indiana Jones at the Discovery Science Center

This exhibit inspired me to check out the repackaged Young Indiana Jones TV episodes. Now I've seen a few, it seems like this exhibit kind of mirrors Indy's TV incarnation. The TV show was meant to educate as well as entertain as the plots for each episode revolve around young Indy's interactions with actual historical figures. Both the exhibit and TV show use Indy's adventures to pique audience interest in real history. It's interesting to see how maybe Lucas sees one aspect of the character, maybe as having a secondary purpose which is to literally teach.

So continuing yesterday's theme of Lucas wanting to educate people, this morning on CBS he announced he is going to open an art museum in part to "educate people into the idea of storytelling". Sounds interesting.
