  • TDLFAN visits Taipei 101, Tallest Building on Earth.

TDLFAN is "on top of the World" literally.
I had the pleasure of visiting the World's Tallest Building, Taipei 101 in Taipei, Taiwan Republic of China.
This impressive building (as seen on Discovery Channel's Amazing Structures series) is one heck of technological and architectural marvel. On this day, I made the trip to the Observation Deck on the 89th and 91st floors and enjoyed the view of Taipei and some surrouding areas. It was a bit hazy so that created some impediments, but still, It was a most enjoyable time. Also during my visit to the building, a fabulous hand made chinese lanter exhibit was on display and a folkloric dance group from Saipan, Mariana Islands, was performing at the top as well. The Taipei 101 complex also includes an ultra modern and most luxurious shopping mall on the first 6 floors of the building, with anything you always wanted on a mall... Starbucks, McDonalds, Gucci, Hermes, Channel etc etc etc... all housed under a most impressive atrium and multi-tiered complex. Very chic!
Just check out the pics and feel free to ask questions if necesary..

Forgot to mention to pay close attention to the "World records" display held by this building. Quite interesting... for example, the elevators traveling to the top of the building are the World's fastest. The trip from the 5th floor to the observation platform took only 37 seconds, and it was a very smooth ride all the way to the top. Awesome!

Very nice! I haven't been to Taipei in 31 years! I guess after all that time, I should say I've never been. I loved the lanterns too.
        I want my cake back!

            Awesome Pics.

I'm not afraid of heights at all, but you'd have a hard time getting me up there.

Re: TDLFAN visits Taipei 101, Tallest Building on Earth.

I've had the pleasure of visiting the Taipei 101. In fact, I witnessed its construction year after year starting all the way back in 1998. Back then, I was intrigued that Taiwan was planning to outdo Malaysia by building a skyscraper taller than the Petronas Towers. I didn't find out the actual name for the skyscraper until it neared completion. I've made a lot of trips to Taipei, and I always stay in the Grand Hyatt Taipei Hotel that is across the street from the Taipei 101; it's a very nice and luxorious hotel. It was interesting to see the Taipei 101 getting taller each time I returned to Taipei. It really is an amazing sight and one of, if not the biggest tourist attractions in Taiwan. Driving from the airport, the Taipei 101 is the most prominent icon in the background. It was very exciting to see it getting taller and taller as the taxi driver drove closer and closer. Once you see it in person, you'll realize just how immense the whole building is.

Speaking of the design, I like how they have elevated walkways leading from the Taipei 101 to adjacent areas so that you don't even have to cross the street. Very convenient! Sadly, I never really did much shopping while I was there. I did look around, however, and found the whole mall very upscale. Lots of variety in the food court too; even found a Subway in there. I basically walked across to the Taipei 101 each day for lunch or dinner, as opposed to dining in the highly overpriced restaurants in the hotel.

The Warner Village Cinema and the New York New York shopping center are also within walking distance from the Taipei 101 and very nice tourist attractions that should not be missed if anyone ever decides to go to Taiwan.

Agreed with what you said up above. And thank heavens, they also have a KFC next to Subway. The elevated walkways to adjacent areas are great. I am jealous you stayed at the nice Hyatt across the street. I was going to check it out but ran out of time and had to go back to my puny hotel, the Ambassador.

I got to stay in a very large suite too since I have a Hyatt membership card. It's a really nice 5 star hotel that offers great views of the Taipei 101.

Nope. Just like to splurge, especially on hotel rooms.
