  • Arizona State Fair 2007: The Mission: In Search of Fried Foods

After such a FANTASTIC trip to DL last week, an Arizona
State Fair report would pale in comparrison. But for some
odd reason, my AZ State Fair Report is being attended to
    first.

On the way to work, I heard on the radio that the AZ State
Fair was opening today, with admission of $1 per person
today before 7pm. That got my attention. The next prompting
to head on down to the AZ State Fair was a previous topic
here at Mice Chat reqarding new State Fair Deep Fried Foods.
I recalled someone mentioning Deep Fried Coke. That was enough
to motivate me to go In Search of Deep Fried Foods that I
    have never eaten before. . . .

Not to get to far ahead, but my Mission Was Successful!!!
During my trip to DL last week, I barely touched any junk food
in DL, which is quite a surprise. BUT tonight!!!!! I made up for
the entire trip, ALL within a short 2 hour time period!

The 1st mission was to leave work at 6pm, and head down to
the fairgrounds. I ended parking for free near 15th ave and
Encanto. Walked to 18th Ave, which was the entrance to the
parking lot for the Fair (of course traffic was horribly congested,
which is why I hoofed it for about 5 blocks). Unfortunately,
this did not allow me time to go home to get my camera, so
sadly, no pics in this report.

Everyone appeared to be trying to get to the fairgrounds to
take advantage of the $1 Ticket entry before 7pm. And I did
    get in just before 7pm.

Now for the mission, check all the food vendors in the Main Food
Cart Area. Yes, the deep fried Snickers were back, BUT one
Deep Fried Food in particular was going to be my hors'deurve,
That new Taste Treat I was tracking down, was Deep Fried Coke!
AND my 1st Deep Fried Food was Found ~ with a slight variation ~
Deep Fried Dr. Pepper. This New Fair Food looked like Funnel Cake
Shrappnel ~ I was told the batter had Dr. Pepper. They were served
in paper cup. They weren't crunchy, and the ones at the bottom of
the cup seemed to be darker and soggy, as if they had soaked at
little bit in Dr. Pepper. Cost $5. Glad I tried them ~ but once is
enough. The soda flavor just didn't carry through.

Now, It was Time for the Main course. Indian Fry Bread seemed
too ordinary. And my eyes were drawn to the fries ~ but the choice~
Real thin cut fries piled and packed high ~OR ~ the fun looking Spiral
Fries. No contest. The Spiral Fries were just more fun looking. The
lady at the window looked at the one they had, and she said
"I'll make a fresh batch". YAY! I saw them take a peeled potato
and watched as they spiral cut a few potatoes, and placed them in
the fryer, which was so close that I could feel some of the hot
cooking oil splatter out through window, SO I stepped aside to
wait for my order, while they served the next person. When the
Spiral Fries came up, they handed my the tray ~ now, I had seen
these type of fries earlier in the year, but had never tried them.
Thumbs up! They were really more similar to potato chips, rather
    than fries. Cost $5.

While eating the spirals, I surveyed the games, and a couple of
rides. None of which appealed to me. They had at least 5
different themed walk Through Fun Houses. HAHAHAHA! I'm
surprised Presslers stick didn't stick a few of these mobile units
around Paradise Pier! HAHAHAHAHA!!! But you can bet he gave
it serious consideration, at least once!

The tickets for Games and Rides was also dones a little different
    this year too.

    (To Be Continued)

They were using cards that you would purchase for $50.
The cards had a scanner code on the back. When you
went on the rides, or played certain games, they would
    just scan your card.

Spent some time going through the exhibitor area and
eating the spiral fries. AND THEN IT WAS TIME FOR DESSERT!

Earlier, my eyes had spotted a BRAND NEW TASTE TREAT!
I headed back to the vendor which was Premiering their
new culinary delight Tonight at the AZ State Fair! I was the
1st one to order this NEW delightful Treat!!!!!!!! Just what
was this BRAND NEW TASTE SENSATION PREMIERING AT
THAT ARIZONA STATE FAIR??????? IT IS:

THE DEEP FRIED ROOT BEER FLOAT!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, I know someone joked about this possibility in the
California State fair topic, BUT now, HERE IN ARIZONA
TONIGHT, the DEEP FRIED ROOT BEER FLOAT HAD IT'S
WORLDWIDE PREIMERE! AND THEY ARE FABU!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just how do they do it ~ with a Root Beer Popsicle, filled
with vanilla Ice Cream, entirely covered with a puff pastry,
deep fried. The outside was a crunchy light golden brown,
and the inside still had the majority of the frozen root beer
popsicle, with all of the vanilla ice cream still inside! Yes,
some of the frozen root beer did melt during the deep fry,
thus requiring several napkins for consuming this AZ Premiered
Food, but the taste of this NEW treat was AMAZING!!!!!

I don't do State or County Fairs very often, BUT with
a Deep Fried Root Beer Float at these Fairs, I will certainly
be attending them more frequently. The cost, oooo, now
    I don't remember exactly, it was either $4 or $5, I think.

After all those Deep fried Items, I chose a Large Watermelon
Lemonade to wash it all down.

My Deep Fried Fair Food Meal Mission was completed.
The next challenge of course, is the digestion. I'm
hoping that will be just as successful
Critter Country's a mess ev'r since the Country Bears were kicked out. Ya can't cover pooh with honey and 'spect people ta like it.

Thanks for the deep fried report!!
      Good morning, son
      In twenty years from now
Maybe we'll both sit down and have a few beers
And I can tell you 'bout today
And how I picked you up and everything changed
      It was pain
      Sunny days and rain
I knew you'd feel the same things...

Thanks for the report on our state fair. Since I am trying to lose weight I have to avoid the fair this year and after reading about the deep fried rootbeer float I guarantee that I would have to cheat on my diet if I passed by that stand.

I still want you to go back and try the deep fried snake, plus something called viking balls which are supposed to be giant deep fried meatballs.

Re: Arizona State Fair 2007: The Mission: In Search of Fried Foods

Our local county fair is coming up. It is always a disappointment because they have none of the fun fried foods that other fairs have.

I could go for a couple deep fried Oreos right now.

I think I need a port-a-potty just from reading about all that fried stuff. Thanks for the report!

Ah... I miss going to State and County fairs!! Theres just something about the atmosphere, let alone all the wonderous artery chocking foods to be had!!! I do like that idea of the card with the scanner code for the rides and stuff! Much easier than dealing with cash all the time. But if you don't spend all of the money on the card do you get a refund at the end of the night?

I was at the AZ State fair from 7pm to 9pm last Friday night.
My only objective was consumption of fried fast foods
(and looking around the fair, while I was eating) . Summary:

                      Consumed:

                      Deep Fried Dr. Pepper
An Order of Frilly Fries (a VERY large order is all they serve)
                      Deep Fried Root Beer Float
                      Large Watermelon Lemonade

                      Total Spent: Less Than $20.00

And to my surprise ~ I had no indigestion

Of course, there are STILL a number of Deep Fried Foods
still to be explored ~ but one deep fried outing a year
is really my limit ~ so further food experimentation will have
                      to wait until next year.
