  • Islands of Adventure - Wizarding World of Harry Potter Update (Merged)

Orlando United has posted some new information about the names of the various attractions, stores, items and eateries in the Wizarding World. For starters the they claim that the new ride will be called Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey. The search through the trademark database also confirmed Flight of the Hippogriff and Dragon Challenge as the new names for Flying Unicorn and Dueling Dragons.
Meanwhile a great bit of coverage of the entire Harry Potter project at Islands of Adventure has been put up as an on-demand video on the local Brighthouse cable network. The videos have also been uploaded to YouTube (in 2 parts) for everyone to enjoy as they document the past, present and what we may see over the next year at the Wizarding World.

There are a lot of people in my choir who are obsessed with Hary Potter and always press me to tell them what will be in Potterland. Thanks for the update, so I can actually have something to tell them!

Does anyone else feel that Universal can't pull this off as well as it should be? It makes me sad. All of the converting old rides sounds boring and disappointing. If you are going to build a new land then new rides should come with it. From the sounds of this update it sounds like only 1 ride/experience will be new. So disappointing. I was hoping Disney would have snatched this opportunity up (not that it is disney but still). We all know they are the only ones who know how REAL magic works.

i gotta disagree with you, after personally seeing how completely immersive and detailed each of the "islands" at Island of Adventure are, i think Universal is going to do a bang up job with the theming and presentation. i can't wait to see it myself (hopefully next fall)

I think these people who constantly claim that Universal doesn't know how to theme haven't actually visited IOA. Its beautiful and as well themed if not more than many places Disney has created.

The question in my mind is whether Universal Creative in 2009 is capable of same greatness as Universal Creative was in 1999. A bunch of folks are changed over, let go, retired, or contracted out now. I'm not making an argument either way - the jury is still out - but certainly it's not the same creative group as it once was.

I totally agree Kevin. And they also have a history of focusing more on the queue of a ride than the actual ride. Dueling Dragons is just a roller coaster with a really cool queue. They didn't build the coaster inside of a mountain or show building or even wrap it through a castle or terrain. It is just a coaster. And after the retheme, it will still be just a coaster with a really good queue.

While Universal's Spiderman ride may very well be the best amusement park attraction ever built, many of the other rides in the park fall short. Duddly Do Right Ripsaw Falls has a fine queue and a great look from the exterior, but you can tell that they either never quite figured out what to do with the actual ride or ran out of money and hoped that people wouldn't notice that the ride is essentially void of thematic details.

For Harry Potter Land, they are really just building one new ride and retheming two rides and some shops and restaurants. Did they hire Paul Pressler to design this "land"? CHEAP!

I hope they do a good job with the new ride, they have a great opportunity to take a little bite out of Disney's traffic, but their history of being successful at this has not been very good.

I LOVE Islands of Adventure, it comes the closest to Disney quality of any non-Disney park I've ever visited. However, it falls FAR short of the Disney standard and there is little reason to believe, from what they have released, that Harry Potter Land will be anything other than more of the same.

I'm in the jury is still out group. While I'm cautiously optimistic, from some of the articles and things I've read online it doesn't sound as impressive as it should be.

Should this knock my socks off then a AP for Universal is in order but if I go there and it's just a well themed land with 1 good ride and nothing more substantial, then not so much.

What the hell? This was the plan since day one and should come as a surprise to no one.

IF it was Disney they would give you one ride (that would probably have broken effects 6 months after opening) and that would be the end of it (like they did with Star Wars and Indy). Theres your "real magic" for you.

Universal is using a big expansion pad + half of lost conintent and creating a whole land. There will only be 1 new ride but it will be a revolutionary e-ticket that is going to easily stomp all over both Indy and Spider-Man (the previous 2 "next gen" attractions). The rethemed Flying Unicorn and Dueling Dragons is a bonus.

There will also be an interactive walking attraction involving wands and I even heard there will be a stage show.

Its going to be a good amount of Harry Potter content I don't see why your complaining about it.

If the land proves to be superpopular im sure they have a phase two planned to add another attraction or two to the area depending on how much land is available. Similar to Carsland at DCA.

                    Universal can do it.

Re: Islands of Adventure - Wizarding World of Harry Potter Update

I for one am super excited for this land to open. I've never been over to the east coast before, and being the huge HP fan that I am, this might finally be the incentive to get me over there. I have a feeling that that new attraction they mentioned in the second half of the video (the one feature the Kuka arm) is going to be some kind of Whomping Willow themed ride. Either way it looks like a lot of fun and I can't wait for it to open!

Who else thinks the wand game found at Great Wolf Lodge is going to be integrated into HP land big time?

That thing is SUCH a HUGE POTENTIAL money maker. It's a great fun attraction at Great Wolf Lodge.. in something of the scale of HP World I'd imagine it could be plussed to such a new level. And big time $$$ for Universal merch sales.

Myself I have to say I'm pretty excited for this, who cares if there's going to be 1 new major attraction and 2 rethemed coasters? For me it's not going to change the fact the Flying Unicorn is a decent family coaster and Dueling Dragons is still my favorite inverted coasters.

As long as the creative team sticks with the overall level of detail that's been put into IOA, I will be perfectly fine with it.

Now when it comes to the Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey dark ride, I really look forward to seeing how it turns out. From the scources I've been getting, it looks to be Men In Black on so many steroids. An interactive dark ride with a very advanced motion base provided by Kuka (However not like in the videos we've been seeing, if my scources are correct..the cars will be circular and will hold more then two people.)

It's already been pretty much confirmed the Basilisk will be a part of the ride due to the snake head statues spotted backstage (The statues look pretty much identicle to the ones seen in the second film in the Basilisk's lair.

If the ride turns out to have a dueling element where you can cast various spells on opposing cars, then all I have to say to Universal is bring it on!
Disney and Universal fan for life!...Shocking ain't it?
Seize the future with X-S! Not Stitch.
I'm not crazy, now if you will excuse me I have tea time with the ghosts at Haunted Mansion.

Didn't Revenge of the Mummy open up in 2004-2005? That ride is awesome (I think even better that Spiderman but that is just because I get incredibly motion sick while on Spiderman) and if some of those people are around I think it would be beneficial.

Apparently Disney doesn't know, or else they wouldn't have 'stolen' Scott Trowbridge away from Uni Creative in December 2007.
