Great job, Steve. I hope Earl Vilmer gets Disney Legend status soon. He has certainly earned it.

Wow, I can't believe that the man responsible for the railroads hasn't been memorialized more by the company. That truly is an oversight that needs to be corrected.

Another great article. I really enjoyed reading it.

Whatever became of the 'fifth' locomotive bought for WDW, the one mentioned as never worked on?

He does have a Window at WDW which says:

              Yucatan Engine Works
              “Highest Grade Steam Power”
              Boiler & Engine Specialists
              Earl Vilmer, Consultant

Maybe they gave him a window there, since he retired in Florida.

But it would certainly seem appropriate that another window would be dedicated to him in DL, also, since he was the primary person responsible for getting the DLRR set up, and made sure it was running for the 1st decade of DL.

You know, Mikado, that's a great question that I have wondered about. I'll see what I can find out.

That's great to know, Aladdin! Are there any photos of that window?

I couldn't find one. But I did find the info about Vilmer's window from two different sites, online.

                      Yeah, I saw those too.

Sure would be neat to get a shot of the Window for Judith. Maybe not a Legend award, but definitely the next best thing.

                        Steve,
Another wonderful article. I was all choked up reading about Earl. My whole life I have been fascinated by Imagineers, so much so that they were one 4 influences that would become my career as an electrical engineer. As much as I love the work of the creatives, it is the technicals that I admire even more. Most of the time they work away in obscurity. Many of us know the stories of Roger Broggie and Bob Gurr. Now we have the story of another.

                        Thanks,
                        Justin

Thank you everyone for the kind words.

You should know that the working title of this piece was "The Most Important Imagineer you've never heard of," and I've very much enjoyed learning about Earl and what he did for Disneyland and Walt Disney World. I am glad that I was able to bring his story to light because, as Justin noted, often these folks don't get the recognition they deserve.

His collection of old cast memeber magazines really shed some great light on what it must have been like to work at the Park; obviously it was much, much smaller then, and the sense of "family" really pervaded the place. Walt was seen almost like the "dad."

It's good to know that Earl was THE guy who made anything railroad related happen at Disneyland.
