  • 'The Avengers' 5/4/12 directed by Joss Whedon

    Me Likey!

Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and the Incredible Hulk will soon start taking orders from Joss Whedon.

Marvel Studios is wrapping up a deal for Whedon to helm "The Avengers," which assembles the superheroes in one pic on May 4, 2012, that Paramount will distrib. Whedon will also rework Zak Penn's script.

Whedon, a favorite among fanboys, most recently penned the script for "Cabin in the Woods," a horror pic that he is also producing for MGM. Pic co-stars Chris Hemsworth, who plays the hammer-wielding Thor.

The creator of series like "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "Angel," "Firefly" and more recently "Dollhouse," all for Fox, has been close to helming a superhero pic before, namely "Wonder Woman" for Joel Silver at Warner Bros., but Whedon wound up ankling the project due to creative issues.

He directed episodes of those series, and recently helmed an episode of Fox's "Glee." "Serenity" is his sole film directing credit. The sci-fi western, distribbed by Universal in 2005, was based on the short-lived "Firefly."

"The Avengers" extends Whedon's long relationship with Marvel. He wrote for the comicbook company's "Astonishing X-Men" series.

"The Avengers" would star Robert Downey Jr. (as Iron Man), Chris Evans (Captain America), Hemsworth (Thor) and Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury). Edward Norton may also return as the Hulk.

"Iron Man 2" bows May 7, followed by "Thor" on May 6, 2011, and "The First Avenger: Captain America" on July 22, 2011. Paramount will distrib.

Two Marvel movies in 2011? Wow! That's going to be a fully loaded summer next year - some major blockbusters coming out.

This is still a rumor, it's unconfirmed. Although I hope it's true

This is an article written with information supplied by reps for Paramount Pictures and the agencies involved in the deal representing Mr. Whedon and the actors named in it. In an entertainment industry trade paper not a fan blog.

Oh, nevermind, didn't see that article earlier. I Totally skipped past it. When I read it on Twitter earlier this afternoon, it was from an unreputable (I think I spelled that right) source and not this article which is why I said what I said

I hope we see Iron Man 3 by 2013 because I really don't care too much about the other three super hero's.
              Happy Halloween!!!

I really hope Norton returns as Hulk and I'm quite dissapointed that a new Hulk movie is not on the horizon. We just re-watched "The Incredible Hulk" the other day and it's really really good.

Oh, and I'm loving the choice of Whedon for Avengers. I hope that Jon Favreau has some creative input for Avengers since he's done such a great job for Iron Man.

I just read over at Mania that there will be an endcap scene at the end of the credits again and...
                  Spoiler
supposed to involve some characters from the other Marvel movies coming out next year.

I just hope it's better than the Avengers movie that came out in the 90's (the one with Uma Thurman & Sean Connery).

I am not doubting your credibility, but its not final yet and there hasn't been any confirmation. I hope it's true but we've all seen movies where directors bail/ studios bail right at the last minute.

Thanks but this has nothing to do with my credibility. Only the information presented in the OP above. A deal is being finalized for a high priority film franchise at Paramount Pictures. This is how they confirm things in Hollywood, with an actual industry media outlet.

Traditionally in a situation such as this one the only major stumbling block could be budget and/or creative issues down the road closer to production. Dollars will no doubt be thrown at this thing so hopefully the only other problematic factor, Edward Norton's past relationship with Marvel, can be smoothly resolved.

All of this would seem to be all good news for the future of Disney's Marvel kicking off onscreen eventually. Having Paramount release successful "lead-ins" could platform quite well for what Burbank is planning down the road.

Wrong Avengers we are talking about the Marvel comic book characters.
