  • Who Made Roger Rabbit? (Disney or WB)

I saw "Who framed Roger Rabbit" yesterday for the first time, on TV. It was a very creative fun movie, but I was very surprised to see Disney & WB toon characters talking to each other in the same scene. (EX: Mickey talking to bugs, daffy talking to Donald) I really liked the concept of all the cartoon characters living in the same world, it kind of makes peace with the whole "WB cartoons are better than Disney Cartoons" & vise versa. But this brings me to my question.. (since they didn't show the credits) Who made the movie, Disney or Warner Bros? Or was it a completely different company that got rights to both?

EDIT: one more question.. Was this movie the inspiration for Toon Town at Disneyland?

I believe it was Touchstone, so Disney.

And yes, it was the inspiration for ToonTown at the parks.

The agreement with Warners stated that Bugs had to have exactly the same amount of screen time as Mickey. Not sure if that applied to Daffy vs. Donald too or not.

          Wasn't it Spielberg's company, Amblin?

If that's the case shouldn't Bugs Bunny make his way to Disneyland from Six Flags and roam around Toontown sometimes?

It was a joint venture with Disney and Amblin. All original characters belong to Gary Wolf as the creator, but in the end, it's up to a 50/50 split between Disney and Amblin to decide what to do with them since they own the character designs.

Animation wasn't done by the normal WDFA troupe -- it was a team headed up by Richard Williams, thus creating neutral territory since the major projects he's worked on was Winnie the Pooh and a Day for Eeyore (the only Disney credit I see), Pink Panther, and Ragedy Ann and Andy.

And if you look closely at the Mickey and Bugs scene, Mickey gets this surprised look on his face. Why? Bugs just flicked him off as he tapped on his carrot.

I'll have to check that out.

Also, since Eisner is now gone, will it be easier for Disney to make a sequel to RR? From what I heard, it was some sort of ego thang between Eisner and Katzenberg or Spielberg (I forget which) that shelved the idea.

Is there really anybody in the business who Eisner DIDN'T have "some sort of ego thang" with?!

I could have sworn this was an MGM property.

Well, there are several RR references on the Disney-MGM property, so you're almost right...

Think of it this way: 3 fingers and one thumb.

The middle finger stays the same because you're not counting thumbs, just fingers.

Re: Who Made Roger Rabbit? (Disney or WB)

It was Steven Spielberg (who is a big cartoon fan of both Disney and WB) who got WB to agree to allowing their characters to appear in a Disney movie. He does have the power.

But, the sad thing now is that since the movie was a big success, everybody seems to own a piece of the movie rights and every time a sequel is mentioned, everybody has their hands out for a piece of the action. So it will probably never happen. And that's why you very seldom see Roger out as a costumed character anymore.

Since Spielberg used his considerable power to make this movies sharing of cartoon characters happen, he owns 50% of anything connected to Roger Rabbit. So, every time Roger appears, Spielberg gets some kind of Royalty payment for the use of the character. He is just a greedy as the rest of them. Gary Wolf does not own any part of the Movie Franchise. He got his payment for the use of the story and some royalties for the re-showing of the movie. But the character of Roger Rabbit, Jessica and the rest are all jointly owned by Disney and Amblin.

                            Thank You Poisonedapples

                              Thanks for all the info.

I'll have to rent the movie to check out Bugs flipping of Mickey.

And from what I've seen of the show (the last 3 fourths), Mickey had much more screen time than Bugs.
