ABC Pulls Mel Gibson's Holocaust Miniseries
    Reuters, 8/1/06

Aug 1, 2006 — NEW YORK (Reuters) - The ABC television network has pulled a miniseries about the Holocaust it was developing with Mel Gibson's production company, the Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday, quoting an unidentified representative for the network.

Gibson was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving early on Friday and was reported to have launched into a tirade against Jews, asking the arresting officer if he was a Jew and blaming the Jews for starting all wars.

The actor, who holds strong conservative Catholic religious and political views and whose father is a Holocaust denier, apologized on Saturday.

No surprise there. Now let's see if Disney pulls the plug on Apocalypto.

It's been in development for about two years with no final script. It may not have gotten off the ground even without Gibson's meltdown.

From the same article as above:

Disney's movie studio arm still plans to release Gibson's self-financed Mayan-language movie "Apocalypto" on December 8, Hollywood's trade papers reported. The Web site Slate.com quoted Walt Disney Studios president Oren Aviv as saying he accepted Gibson's apology.

No, more like he accepted the fact that the movie is 3/4 in the can and could only benefit from it's release.

True, but Disney is not without precedent as far as distancing themselves from controversial films (see: Fahrenheit 9/11). Disney (Touchstone) is only the distributor of the film and they do have an out clause they can exercise if need be. I expect them to take a wait-and-see attitude. If the furor dies down, it'll be business as usual. If Mel continues to put his foot in it or the public/press won't give it a rest, Disney might bail.

Still, how many people really care about a historical epic in the Mayan language? It doesn't exactly have "blockbuster" written all over it. Disney may just release Apocalypto with minimal fanfare and move on.

Good point. It seems reasonable that if the heat got worse they would bail on it leaving him to distribute the film on his own. Personally I think it seems like an interesting film but it doesn't exactly have a huge market appeal, you are right.

I mean, who greenlit that miniseries? Gibson's anti-Semitic views were well known in Hollywood circles for years now.

It's like Fred Phelps making a Matthew Shepard documentary. It just shouldn't be done.
