The new show at the Planetarium is horrible. Why close it down for 5 years, spend so much money on a remodeled dome and star projector, and use the new projector for 10 minutes of a 45 minute show and fill the last half hour with a half-a** Imax knockoff history of astronomy show??? Its A Planetarium!!! Show the stars! Show the planets!!

I liked the old observatory better...

That is very disappointing... Be sure to let them now if you haven't already.

Hmmm I have bus tickets to go up there in a few weeks -- what else is there to do up there besides the Planetarium? I know that the Planetarium is a separate charge from the bus...

LOL was the show at least good (minus the fact that it's not the best use of the space)?

I've ridden my bike up from The Valley to Griffith Observatory. it's a tough road (in some places only dirt), but it's closed to motor vehicles, so it's somewhat safe. I highly recommend it.

          heh, best use of space....

Oh, yeah they have a new museum downstairs with a huge 2.8 GIGA-pixel resolution mural of a section of space, that's cool. The cafe isn't very good at all, cold sandwiches and salads only. (To be fair, the chef said they did have a hot menu also, but the oven was causing smoke in the telescope room... they said they were working on it..) Upstairs it looked like some of the exhibits weren't ready yet, (display cases were empty, the Tesla coil was turned off...) and a minor complaint, they took out the pegs in the pendulum. That was the coolest thing, to come back after a couple hours and see 2 or 3 more pegs knocked down. Now there isnt much of a reference other than the numbers along the circumference of the pit.

As for the show being good, Id give it a so-so. It would be fine as a stand alone movie, but showing in the planetarium ruined it.

          Overall, I was disappointed.

Thanks for the review tho -- I am sure a few more will appear on here after some of us pop up there in a few weeks. Hopefully they'll have some of those issues resolved. And put the pegs back in the pendulum!! WTF?

This sounds exactly what Kevin and Bean were going on about on a local LA radio station KROQ!

Do I have to pay extra for that?

I did it about 13 years ago. I don't know how bad that road looks now. The asphalt was breaking up in a lot of spaces. Might be nice to get some city funds up there to resurface it. Otherwise, bring the mountain bikes (I was on a road bike).

                  Here is the google map:
                  http://www.google.com/maps?ie=UTF8&o...,0.028925&om=1

Drag the map southward to see where the Observatory is.

I'm very, very cheap! You can pass this info on if you like.

                        (And TFTR!)

My memory is fading, but each one of those switchbacks is very steep (for me, on a road racing bike, without a granny crank). I'll try to find the topographical map.

                        Here:
                        http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?lat=...ad27&layer=DRG

Park at Travel Town (600 feet). End at Griffith Observatory (1131 feet). Looks as if the road gets up to 1300 feet, and I do remember looking down at the Observatory at one point.

There is a lot to do up there besides the planetarium and the amazingly stellar (heh heh) views! You may want to check out this thread with photos:
