  • Happy Birthday Vin Scully!!!

Actually this is a belated happy birthday to a man whose voice is a huge part of the "soundtrack of Southern California"..and who is among the greatest not just sportscasters, but broadcasters who ever lived.

Vin Scully celebrated his 79th birthday on November 29.

He has been with the Dodgers since he first worked with the great Red Barber back in Brooklyn in 1951.

Growing up in the 60's in Southern California like me, you went to sleep with the radio under your pillow, listening to Scully.

He was one of the first to enter the broadcasters wing of the Baseball Hall Of Fame.

Along with being the voice of the Dodgers for over 50 years, he also was the lead announcer for NBC's Game Of the Week and postseason and World Series coverage for many years.

He called the World Series for CBS Radio many other years.

    And didya know...

He called NFL football on CBS Television for several years back in the 70's and early 80's...he caled the famous "The Catch" game when the 49ers beat the Cowboys for their first NFC title.

And he's called golf tournaments, and I am sure a number of other events that I just can't recall right now.

With his advancing age, he has cut back on his workload...doing only most home games and road assignments no further east than Denver. And he's mostly on television now...with the radio folks only getting him on simulcast for the first three innings.

And oh by the way...he's about the most unassuming and nice gentleman you'd ever want to meet.

As Vinny would say..."a very pleasant good day to you, wherever you may be"...let's "pull up a chair" and wish the man a belated...

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!

If he were indeed on MC, I'd suggest his name to be...Class Gentleman.

Again, Happy Birthday to a broadcasting legend.

Walt Disney isn't, but people do wish him a happy birthday, as well as some other celebs.

That's what the "Entertainment" forum can be used for.

And, people have the choice to not read threads that don't interest them.

I will never forget his call of Kirk Gibsons HR in game 1 of the 1988 World Series. I still get chills when I hear it.

He was actually calling the game for NBC's national telecast during that moment.

                        OFF TOPIC...
When you see the video of the homer, you always see that one set of tail lights of someone leaving early. I always wondered how those people felt...

Yeah, i always thought that was cool. Like he was meant to be there for that game.

Those people probably lie and say they were there for the entire game. ;-)
Kinda like a few months ago when they hit 4 homeruns in the bottom of the 9th to tie the game against the Padres. I was at that game and I stayed for the entire thing. But I couldnt help but think about all the people that left before the game was over. When I saw the replay of the game later that night and saw how many people came running back to the stadium I started laughing.
