The 50th annual San Francisco Film Festival will honor director George Lucas with a one-time-only award named after fest founder Irving "Bud" Levin.

"In so many ways, George typifies Bud's spirit and legacy, with his deep appreciation for the art of film and the role of San Francisco in world cinema, and with his flair for entrepreneurship," said Graham Leggat, exec director of the San Francisco Film Society.

Fest's 50th anni edition will honor the city, including a special section devoted to Bay Area filmmaking.

"San Francisco is significant as a filmmaking center because of its breadth and depth, and it's very important how Hollywood is part of that -- with George, Francis Ford Coppola and Pixar." Leggat said. "The fact that some of them are major iconoclasts who make their homes and business here speaks volumes."

Award will be presented to Lucas at fest's Film Society awards night May 3 at the Westin St. Francis Hotel.
Festival will present pics from more than 50 countries April 26-May 10.
