    Screenwriter Starkman dies at 55

    Scribe created series 'Joke,' 'Magic Shop'

    Screenwriter, filmmaker and TV producer/designer Laurence Starkman died Jan. 22 in Los Angeles. He was 55.

    Starkman and his wife, Carla Malden, daughter of Karl Malden, worked as a screenwriting team for 25 years and contributed to numerous Hollywood projects. He created and produced childrens' comedy series "Joke Time" and "Magic Shop" for Disney Channel and segments for Nickelodeon.

    In addition to his film work, his credits in television include producing and designing main title sequences for TV shows and films such as "Escape from L.A." and "Baby's Day Out."

    He was a member of the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.

    Starkman is survived by his wife and a daughter.

    That's very sad . I really loved watching the "Joke Time" and "Magic Shop" segments that took place on Main Street.
