Christian Bale is in negotiations to join Johnny Depp in Michael Mann's upcoming "Public Enemies."

According to a person familiar with the situation, Bale will play Melvin Purvis, the legendary FBI agent who led the manhunt for John Dillinger. Depp is starring as Dillinger in the pic, which is set up at Universal and is slated to begin production in March.

Michael Mann, Johnny Depp and Chritian Bale ...

It's a movie I'll want to see because of the actors and Mann, and a movie Belle will want to see because of the men ...

Its a dream team, I'm sure Mann will put together his usual terrific supporting cast as well. We'll probably be talking about this one this time next year for Oscar nominations, can't wait for it.

He and Robert evidently had an exceptionally great time making 'Once Upon A Time In Mexico' so it doesn't seem that farfetched, fingers crossed.

Cotillard joins Depp, Bale in crime drama

Director Michael Mann has set Marion Cottilard to join Johnny Depp and Christian Bale in "Public Enemies."

The Depression-era crime drama gets under way in Chicago on March 10 for Universal Pictures.

Channing Tatum, Giovanni Ribisi, Stephen Dorff and Jason Clarke are also joining the cast.

The Oscar-nominated "La Vie en rose" star Cotillard will play Billie Frechette, the lover of the country's most notorious gangster, John Dillinger (Depp).

Tatum will play outlaw Pretty Boy Floyd, Ribisi will play Alvin Karpis, Dorff is near a deal to play Homer Van Meter, and Clarke will play John "Red" Hamilton. That quartet repped a Dillinger gang that knocked off banks all over the Midwest during the Depression.

Bale plays Melvin Purvis, who was tapped by FBI chief J. Edgar Hoover to lead a manhunt that established the FBI as the country's first federal police force after the G-Men killed Dillinger outside the Biograph Theater in 1934.

David Wenham and Stephen Graham have joined the cast of Universal's "Public Enemies," Michael Mann's gangster film starring Johnny Depp and Christian Bale.

An adaptation of Brian Burrough's book "Public Enemies: America's Greatest Crime Wave and the Birth of the FBI, 1933-43," the film centers on the government's attempt to stop John Dillinger and his gang. Depp is playing Dillinger to Bale's famed FBI agent Melvin Purvis.

Wenham is playing Pete Pierpont, a member of Dillinger's crew who has a violent hostility to all authority. British actor Graham will portray Baby Face Nelson.

Also in the cast are Marion Cotillard, Channing Tatum, Giovanni Ribisi and Stephen Dorff.

Shooting begins in March in Chicago.

COLUMBUS -- The fake snow looked just like real snow, only cleaner.

The movie star looked just like he does on the big screen, only smaller.

And the gawkers? Well, they looked down the wrong street most of the time, but that didn 't seem to matter.

Everyone was caught up in the thrill Monday when Hollywood came to small-town Wisconsin as the Johnny Depp movie "Public Enemies " started filming in Columbus.

Hundreds of fans stationed themselves on top of snow piles, with cell phones and cameras, ready for a glimpse of someone famous.

                          Some clearly hoped for more.

Hannah Crawford, a Columbus native and aspiring model/actress who now lives in Madison, stood on South Water Street near the makeup trailer with a sign: "Johnny Depp, come have a drink after the show. "

South Water Street was the site of the first Depp sighting of the day.

Hope Menzel, 11, saw him come out of the makeup trailer behind Jodee-O 's bar and enter a black Ford Expedition.

Then, it happened. The rear passenger-side window unrolled, and Depp 's hand emerged, waving.

                          IF YOU GO
While the production company doesn 't release an official schedule to the public, word is that "Public Enemies " will continue filming in Columbus today, go to Darlington to film a scene involving Johnny Depp in the Lafayette County Courthouse on Wednesday, and return to Columbus on Thursday.

Based on Monday 's filming in Columbus, here are some tips for fans:

Be prepared to walk, as police will keep traffic several blocks away from the shooting.
Dress for the cold, as you 'll be standing in it.

Just because everyone is gawking doesn 't mean you 're at the scene of the action. A large crowd gathered near Columbus City Hall around the lunch hour Monday, gazing intently toward the old bank on James Street. But the film action was taking place several blocks behind them, as Johnny Depp drove a vintage car back and forth past a cemetery on Lewis Street with only a handful of spectators watching.

When the big white van arrives, it means something may happen soon. Of course, this could be something very unexciting, such as mechanics working on the vintage cars.

When the black Ford Expedition with Indiana plates pulls up, director Michael Mann, star Johnny Depp, or other actors may be inside. Or not.

COLUMBUS -- Everywhere else in Wisconsin, we are glad to see the snow finally melt. Here, we watch the quick reinvention of winter -- a machine that shaves ice into flakes and instantly whitens the street curbs.

Talk about split personalities. To you, it's south central Wisconsin. To them, it's Indiana.

Outside the pharmacy, a window mannequin flaunts finely tailored women's fashion. Above a tavern is a sign that says "funeral home." Inside the bank is an art gallery, but that's for real.

A St. Pat's reveler steadies a video camera instead of a mug of green beer. Lawn chairs meant for summer picnics hold people cocooned in layers within quilts and parkas.

Some wait all day for a glimpse of Hollywood as they've never seen it.
The filming of "Public Enemies," a movie starring Johnny Depp, has begun -- and we're not sure what to expect or make of it. Consider the phone calls that Kim Bates fields, through the Columbus Visitor Center:

Where's the viewing area? (There is none; "some people thought there would be bleachers.")

What's the filming schedule? (If one exists, it is not made public. Film sites change daily.)

When will autographs be given? (By chance/luck. There are no guarantees.)
Filming continues here for at least another day or two, then moves to Darlington, Oshkosh, Madison and Milwaukee -- not necessarily in that order.

"Ladies, if you're here to marry him, I'm sorry," jokes a security guard, puffing on a cigarette. "I can't help you.

"And the rumor that Johnny Depp is signing autographs at 7:30 p.m.? Not true."
