I'm curious if many have opinions on the star rating option. It seems more people use it to kind of insult the original post than to say "Yes, this is a helpful/valuable/quality post". Thoughts?

Re: Star Ratings - Actually helpful?
I have always thought that the Reputation System here at MiceChat was a positive thing. It gives us members a say in things. We can applaud people when they do well. We can also have a say when the opposite occurs. Over the years, the Reputation System has been criticized, analyzed, reworked, and even abused. I am glad it is part of the experience at MiceChat. I think all the members here at MiceChat should get in the habit of using it, and using it responsibly.

That's ok, Barb! While you're here, do you have any thoughts on the star ratings?
You bring up a good point about Rep. I also am a an of Rep. Yes, it can be abused, but it has a check system in it in that it can be countered by the person who received it and investigated by mods. I'm not sure if there is any system like this for the stars... I don't think so since it doesn't really "hurt" the user that receives the rating, it only hurts the post itself, I suppose.

Re: Star Ratings - Actually helpful?
The rating a thread feature is kind of hidden, and I believe not too many people even know it is there. I admit to not using it much. I think it works on an average basis, so if a thread starts out with a 5, and someone comes along, and rates it lower, it can never be a 5 again. I believe the feature will tell you how many people have actually rated the same thread, and I have never seen one thread get a lot of "rates". Also the stars, I believe do not show up in New Posts. Only, in the individual forums. Therefore, they might attract someone's attention.

Re: Star Ratings - Actually helpful?
I agree, Mr Wiggins. Additionally, if users are using it to mark trollish, flaming, etc. threads, they should be using the report button or rep system instead. Seems redundant in that sense.
I've also noticed that many anti-Disney or negative reviews have earned low ratings, as well as very neutral subjects like chat threads which should be garnering no such ratings.
I'd love to hear from someone who finds these ratings beneficial, as I have a hard time seeing any.

Never used the star system, nor looked at it. So no, it's not helpful to me.
Rep? Rarely use that. Used to use it some, for private feedback, but now that you can't leave a comment? Don't use it at all.I pledge allegiance to the Earth, one planet, many gods, and to the universe in which she spins.

Re: Star Ratings - Actually helpful?
I think of stars as a guide to new lurkers. If it makes the site seem good 5 stars. If it makes it bad 1 star.
Having rep under names also provides a guide to who's posts are credible. Although I think many got helpful rep from arguing for or against a point, not posting useful information.Be Cool Stay in School!
