  • Just what LA needs ... ANOTHER Top 40 station

This makes me sad. I loved the format.

FM talk radio format all talked out? KLSX-FM (97.1) going top 40 Friday [UPDATED] | Pop & Hiss | Los Angeles Times

another top 40/"CHR" (contemporary hit radio) station to sing along to in their cars, as L.A.'s only "all-talk" commercial FM station now appears to be all talked out.

KLSX (97.1 Free FM) will switch formats Feb. 20 to CBS Radio's latest concept, titled AMP Radio (not to be confused with the now-defunct Amp'd Mobile, a company that heavily pushed mobile radio to cellphone users in 2006 but filed for bankruptcy protection in 2007).

A CBS Radio news release says the new station (its tagline is "all the hits") will "combine the power of its on-air position with myriad online and digital applications creating a full 360 degree audio and visual experience."
Translation? Listeners of KLSX were probably too old.

It's news like this that makes me glad I purchased Sirius radio 3 years ago.

This makes me sad. I've been listening to talk radio since I was in my early teens. Like Howard Stern and Kevin and Bean are what we listened when Dad drove me to school. So this is not cool and I don't even live in California any more. I still listen to FHF online too...

I'm so sick of the top 40 stations, they are taking over all the stations.

Neither of those shows are considered talk radio but AM Drive, Stern of course before he crept to satellite.

If the station can't pull ratings the sales departments can sell 'em. They've had to combo KLSX for years with ad packages for The Wave and even sometimes KROQ.

Here is the current Los Angeles market and their most recent ratings:

            KIIS-FM Clear Channel CHR/Top 40 5.8

Re: Just what LA needs ... ANOTHER Top 40 station

              Thanks for the ratings D.

I see that KLSX is pretty far down, but I don't think they tell the whole story. I know for me, I don't get the station out here where I live. Which forces me to listen online. And if you listen to Carolla and FHF you'll notice that MANY of their calls are from out of market people who are listening online.

It's just sad. I've been listening to this station for 11 years, since it started. It had some good things (Stern, Carolla, FHF, Tim Conway, Leykis) and some REALLY bad things (Bonaduce, Kato, etc). But it was something different, not the same thing that's on every other station.

I know that Carolla and Leykis will end up somewhere, as both are syndicated. Plus Leykis probably has enough of a draw to move to Satellite or online. Not as big as Stern mind you, but he will find a place.

I think I may have to get Satellite now since that seems to be the only way to get half way decent radio anymore.

I have Sirius, but enjoyed listening to 97.1 during my commute and enjoyed having Adam Carolla and Tom Leykis to listen to. It was always entertaining since most every music station plays the same songs anyway.

Clinks you just got more awesome, being a FHF. I've been listening to them since... high school getting up at 6 am with my alarm clock and then a solid listener in my 20s. I actually have a really funny story about Jaime, Frosty, and Frank and high school.

Does anyone remember when they had Sam Ruben on between Stern and FHF? That sucked.

He wasn't very good at all. Sounded too friendly after Howard.

Yeah, I always used to pray that Stern would go to 11 so Sam wouldn't be on.

I always hoped Sam just wouldn't show up. Just decide not to come into work. He was okay on t.v. but on the radio it was a weird mix with Stern, then him, then FHF....

This actually makes me happy! I don't like listening to angry people yell at each other, so another music station is a positive thing for me. If I listen to "talk" radio, it's on NPR.

When Indie 103.1 changed, that was more of a loss for me.

The only show like that was Leykis, the rest were pretty funny actually. Well, Adam Carolla and Frosty, Heidi and Frank.

Tom was only good in small doses IMO.
