  • Newsies Coming to Broadway March 2012!

Newsies is opening on Broadway for a limited run at the Nederlander Theatre from 3/12/2012 to 6/10/2012! I missed the premiere at Papermill so I'm ecstatic that the show is transferring!

So glad to hear that this show is coming to the stage. One of the few movies I fell that would transfer rally well. Unlike some others (shrek). I hope I get to see it, atleast on tour.

Great news, lets hope they give it a tour in the West End.

And here's hoping they will release an album.

I'm having trouble with some of the creative decisions that have been made to adapt the book from the film. Most disturbing is the decision to eschew Horace Greeley, the closing of the American frontier, and the "Go west, young man." themes, which are fundamental to the "Jack Kelly" character and to the story.

The show is now open ended which is excellent news. (if you pardon the pun!)

I've seen suggestions that they should make it into a movie at some point. Can't say I'd disagree at that idea.

^Got mine on pre-order. It's released here Monday so not long to wait now!

I'm really hoping the do decide to tour the production. I can hope, but given the praise its received it surely 'has legs'.

Well the release of the CD over here has now been pushed back twice to June 25 - only thing I can think of is that they're selling more than expected in the US, which is surely a good thing.

Anybody else really bothered that the Broadway version has altered lyrics and stuff? Some of it came up on my Pandora and had different lyrics in the songs than the original which is my favorite. This bothers me as if I ever see them on Broadway, I won't be able to sing along AND also Christian Bale sings all of it better.

^That is a opinion :P I can understand that you might not like the altered stuff, because like you said, you love the movie. I like the musical more because that is MY first version of Newsies that I heard. And the lyric changes all are there to help the story on stage. Like all other stage musicals that once where movies I think it shouldn't be JUST the movie but placed on a stage. I like them to add stuff and make it a stand alone piece and if that means changing lyrics than I don't mind. I see it as MORE Newsies stuff to love! You now have the movie songs AND musical songs which are different version of the same thing. The more to listen and love in my ears :P (like musical revivals!)

I have never done too well with change unfortunately. Some things are okay for me, and other things can be ruined for me as a result. My friend said she saw Mary Poppins on Broadway and was really thrown when her favorite classic movie was really chopped and skewed with a different storyline and characters. It sort of ruined it for her. Part of the fun is seeing our favorite books and movies come to life as stage shows or vice verse. When unexpected changes are thrown in there it breaks the continuity and originality that made that movie or book or whatever special to begin with.
