  • Want That Disney Movie on Netflix, Redbox? Wait 28 Days

Disney is now hopping on the 28 Day No Direct Sale to Rental Companies window bandwagon that the other studios are on.Want That Disney Movie on Netflix, Redbox? Wait 28 Days | News & Opinion | PCMag.com

Disney is the latest movie studio to withhold its films from rental services like Netflix and Redbox for several weeks after their DVD and Blu-ray release.Disney's John Carter, which was released on Blu-ray and DVD on June 5, will not be available as a rental for 28 days after its release, Home Media Magazine reported.

Redbox, however, vowed to get its hands on John Carter "through alternative means," which usually means that it will buy copies of the movie on its own. The movie should be available by June 12. Redbox-owned Blockbuster Express, won't feature John Carter until July 3.

Redbox has always worked with Disney on a per-title basis, without a contract, Home Media said.
Other major studios including 20th Century Fox, Universal Pictures, and Warner Bros. also make rental companies wait to offer their new releases. In January, Warner extended its wait time from 28 to 56 days.

Disney previously offered its DVDs to Redbox the same day they went on sale at retail stores and online. Disney's withholding practice actually began with the May 22 release of
    The Secret World of Arrietty.
