  • 'Wreck-It Ralph' Box Office Smash

Disney Animation Studios' Wreck-It Ralph rushed to the top of the box office chart on Friday with an opening day gross of $13.4 million.

The 3D animated toon, nabbing an A CinemaScore, will easily win the weekend with a gross in the $45 million to $50 million range. The family film, costing $165 million to produce, over performed Friday on the East Coast, where kids in New York, New Jersey and Long Island were out of school because of superstorm Sandy.

Directed by Rich Moore, Wreck-It Ralph tells the story of an arcade game villain -- voiced by John C. Reilly -- who is sick of playing the bad guy and begins game jumping, which is forbidden. The voice cast also includes Sarah Silverman, Jack McBrayer and Jane Lynch.

The aftermath of the historic storm isn't hurting the box office; if anything, it appears that people in affected areas are looking for a distraction.

New family film Wreck-It Ralph opened to a record-breaking $49.1 million from 3,752 theaters -- the top weekend debut for a Disney Animation Studios title.

Disney Animation's Tangled, opening over the Thanksgiving holiday in 2010, posted a weekend gross of $48.8 million (the film, opening on a Wednesday, grossed a total of $68.6 million in its first five days).

Wreck-It Ralph did especially well on Friday in the Northeast, where families looked for a distraction from the aftermath of superstorm Sandy. Most of the 300 theaters closed early last week because of Sandy were back in business by the weekend.

Moviegoing for the weekend on the East Coast was solid, but not spectacular. Still, box office grosses nationwide were up 23 percent over a year ago, when Puss in Boots debuted to $34.1 million.

Overseas, Wreck-It Ralph rolled out in its first six markets, grossing a pleasing $12 million for a worldwide bow of $61.1 million.

"For a company whose foundation was built on animation, it's a pretty incredible thing to have Tangled and now Wreck-It Ralph do such great business," Disney executive vice president of distribution Dave Hollis said. "It is a testament to the storytelling, and it's about connecting with both families and adults."

Wreck-It Ralph, nabbing an A CinemaScore domestically, cost $165 million to produce. Families made up 68 percent of the audience; the rest were general moviegoers.

Directed by Rich Moore, the 3D toon tells the story of an arcade game villain -- voiced by John C. Reilly -- who is sick of playing the bad guy and begins game jumping, which is forbidden. The voice cast also includes Sarah Silverman, Jack McBrayer and Jane Lynch.

I can see the campfires smokin’ at the breaking of the dawn,
I can hear the bronco's neighin', I can hear the cowboys sing,
I'd like to be in Texas for the Round-up in the Spring."

Wreck-It Ralph for life. They should make a sequel based on Ralph stuck in Hero's Duty the whole movie.
