  • What do you use to clean your pins?

Hi everybody - I've noticed that many of my older pins are starting to tarnish or develop little bumps in the metal sections that don't come off with a dry cloth. Has anyone used a specific product with good success that doesn't harm the colored sections of pins? Thanks.

I just use water and dishwasher soap. Not sure if that's the best way, though.

I also use soap (a mild detergent like dish or hand soap) and water. I will also use a soft cloth (like an old t-shirt) to wipe them. I find that textured paper towels will sometimes scratch the smooth enamel fill a little.

I suppose you could test (on a less important pin) white vinegar or window cleaner. Vinegar will help to clean corrosion or oxidation (which could account for discoloration of the metal). Window cleaner helps to eliminate residue from chrome coated metals (i.e. plumbing fixtures) so that they shine. I only stated collecting a couple of years ago, so I don't really have many older pins to test. (I would also advise storing your pins in plastic to avoid contact with fingers and human oils...)

Yeah, I'm definitely planning to switch over to the baseball card sleeves rather than the pin bags so I don't touch them as often. The main problem is older ones - a couple of Tomorrowland '98 pins look in as bad of shape as...TL '98 did! Major tarnishing on the gold/silver parts, as real silver tarnishes. Just afraid that some Brasso might wipe out the colored enamel, too.
