The thing I miss the most was the music. The new music is simply horrible and does not match the feel and motion of the ride.

I keep saying to myself that nostalgia is such a nice feeling but doesn't help been open to new things but...

Space Mountain was SO good, SO beautiful, SO inspiring!!! I miss it SO much. And you know what I hate most? The loss of the first blast off: I was always so excited about the ride I always used to forget about it, so the real blast off was such a nice and thrilling surprise!

          Too bad...

I for one, will be open to new things and welcome change in everything I do, and especially at Disney. Problem is... most new things coming out Disney (and this applies more to WDW than DLP) are simply not as magical and nice as some of the things they have taken down and replaced with.

I miss the music quite badly. Frankly I miss it as much as I'd miss the Pirates music on POTC (and a lot more than I'd miss the IASW music, haha).

Oh and the whole thought process and artwork behind it, obviously. That poster, that Jules Verne thing... Honestly, they ripped its heart out didn't they?

I totally agree with you TDLFAN. Giving a fair judgement is never easy especially for us disney maniacs to tend to be IMHO a little too much conservative about saying goodbye to old attractions and welcoming new one. For example, when I rode Horizons (Epcot), I fell in love with that show but it was because I know so much about Disney history (compared to the average guest of course) that I could appreciate that attraction as it was an archeological artifact coming from the 70's. But a fairer eye couldn't help but wish for a new attraction.

The problem is not about replacing attractions but replacing them with better ones.

I think the new visual effects and such inside the mountain are great. But the original "Earth to the Moon" version wins hands-down here. The music was better, the gold cars looked better, and the queue actually matched the attraction.

In general, the ride itself is still excellent, but the theme is ruined with the newer, "hipper" Mission 2. Remember, this is based on a Jules Verne story, not the present day?...

I'm interested to hear the old audio now. I've heard the new soundtrack, and I think its good, but I have never been to DLP so I don't know how it "works" with the attraction. Is there a website that I can download the audio from?

                      Old music: http://sm.dlpfan.org/_media/sound/ce_spacemountain.mp3

In my experience, it makes a world of difference. The old music makes the ride feel almost epic, sweeping and soaring exactly where it should in perfect coherence to the ride and theme, providing essentially the major part of the emotional experience of the ride. The new music doesn't quite effect you in that same manner. It's kind of like the difference of watching a really good epic film with the sound blasting from a surround system or watching it with the sound off while your brother is fiddling with an old keyboard in the next room. Or perhaps that dog in my avatar, though he does an excellent Beethoven.

I'm sure glad I got to ride S.M. version 1 a month before it closed. It was amazing. Since I haven't ridden version 2 I cant compare it to the original. Just glad I was able to experience the first one.

I totally agree. And *wow* puss... a live recording with ride's sound effects! Cool! I can close my eyes and know exactly what's going on.. Gives me goosebumps!

I've never even been to DLP and I miss Space Mountain: From the Earth to the Moon. I guess maybe I just loved the books so much i really wanted to see it. Also, Space Mountain: Mission 2 seems so temporary. At some point people will forget there was a first mission. I doubt many guests at MGM say "Lets go ride Twilight Zone Tower of Terror 4!"

maybe I'm just wierd but I also thought the DMs gave the attraction a quirky uniqueness.
