  • TDLFAN's DLP summer update/Wishes (photos)

Yours truly had the pleasure of visiting DLRP in late august to check out their version of the night time show "Wishes" and check what's going on at the park. After recent visits by several other fans, I was looking forward the most to alledged improvements in maintenance and the like.

    Disappointment follows.

While I was glad to see very healthy crowds packing DLP and WDSP, and some improvement being made to some areas of the park (like refurbishments in progress at BTMRR and the DLHotel for example), the fact remains that DLP is a long long long way from being concidered "acceptable" in the cleanliness and maintenance category.

As you will see on this pictorial... some areas of the park are great, while others are simply NOT. I have stated before that DLP has the gift of being the most beautiful and dirtiest DL park on Earth. Hard to imagine both night and day extremes can be found in one package, but DLP excels on this.. and that is not a good compliment. I am beginning to believe this park will never see the glory days again... the damage done by years of neglect and poor maintenance practices seem to get worst and worst, which means, it will be more costly to fix it in the long run.. Guests don't help either as they mercilessly trash this park, and some CMs seem to be there to goof off rather than work. But I am documenting examples of this on my photos..

Finally, the main reason for my visit was to check out "Wishes", a show that was boo-ed off the schedule last year after a disastrous debut run. I was not expecting much but guess what... TDLFAN was pleasantly surprised. True, the show suffers from a lack of pyro magic, and more so because of the restrictions imposed on DLP to keep these to a minimun height and noise standard. Yet, DLP's Wishes does something the much heralded MK version does not: uses laser and photographic animation to enhance the experience. While the MK's Wishes has extraordinary pyro and minimalistic (if not outdated) castle projections, DLP's Wishes delivers an added layer of fun that elevates the show to a higher degree of quality. Many will continue to argue the show is bad because of the low level pyro and such. We all are entitled to opinions. However, I thouroughly enjoyed this presentation for what it is: a moving tribute to Disney's films with added pixie dust to enhance it. Not a total waste of my time and the crowd watching must have felt the same way as the final applause was quite enthusiastic from the crowd. I rate DLP's Wishes 3 1/2 stars out of 5*****.

Here are the photos of the carnage.

Thanks for the great photos and park updates.

The number of lights out on the DL hotel is sad, since it is so easily seen. Too bad about the rest of the poor conditions too but at least they aren't as obvious.

Oh yes, the other problems are very obvious as well. I don't go searching for bad things when I visit the parks. When I document something bad, it's because I noticed on by chance.

Those were great pics, TDLFAN, as usual! Do you visit CIty Hall and show them your pictures? They really need to get their custodial act together.

I still want to visit DLP soon though.

Well let us not spoil our Attends now shall we. I think everyone is pretty much aware of the advanced state of decay in which many parts of this place find themselves (even before you admittedly helpfully reminded us roughly 13,863 times).

The fact remains that refurbishment walls can currently be found all over the place and things are looking up after a decade of neglect. Besides, even with a few rotten facades it's still a magnificent place (unless of course all you can see are those facades). Now, let's use our hopper passes on a different park and find something really weep-worthy...

Get your numbers right. That would be 14,389 times.

You are repeating what I said.. "DLP can pull off both extremes". However, in a park that dares have the "Disney" name attached to it, rotten walls and peeling paint is totally UNacceptable. The day the french get that thru their heads, the day this park will be an even more impressive jewel. As of now...? NO.

Believe it or not, even the WDSP was in much better conditions over DLP, concidering it is a crappy park to visit. Could someone please remove "CineMagique" off WDSP and place it at MGM?

And you should. As for me showing them pics in City Hall, well... no I have never done so. Last time I complaint about line cutting problems at City Hall, the lovely hostess by the name of Amelie basically told me "that's the way things are in France, this is not les Etats Unis..." So no need to go there to be reminded how much better we are at running parks.

Mikelan6... I would have picked up one for myself but they are only available in children sizes, and not in adults sizes. Trust me, I would have bought one myself.

I know you don't search this things out, what I meant by not as obvious is (at least in the photos) the decay is more noticble when you zoomed in on the problem spots. But the hotel problems can be seen for a good distance. Regardless NO Disney park should be allowed to fall so behind in maintance.

                          sad but true.

i find a angry/annoyed/unhinged look on your face normally stops line cutters in thier tracks there, they dont want to be hurt.
though i wouldnt dream of doing anything bad at dlp. (nearly done so at alton towers though!)

Im going to write them a e-mail with a link to your photo's and inform them its totally unaceptable that the park be allowed to fall to its current standards. Also maybe I should post links to TDLFAN's Tokyo Disney pics to show them in the right direction.

I for one dont like MKs Wishes at all. However even just the pictures of the new DLP Wishes look 1000% better than the lame ace version at MK. Well done.

The poor park needs some immediate attention. They are moving too slow. It's not as dramatic as Disneyland's renovations a few years ago, but I must be happy and compliment them on the progress they are making. It's better than none at all. Disneyland Paris suffers a lot from the lack of dedication by employees, the trashing it recieves from messy guests, lack of upkeep, and dramatic weather conditions that slams the park's intricate and delicate details.

Great pics as always, my friend.

You could have another career if you ever tire of dealing with all those free-loaders like me in First Class ;-)

Wishes does look good ... if different.

As to the condition of the park, it looks very much the same as it did in May. (except the Emporium is now completed and BTMRR is under wraps).
The wood rot that you photographed on the Plaza Pavillion, Lucky Nugget and Silver Spur was all very noticeable on my trip ... not to mention the mildew all over the place.

The castle also showed so many obvious signs of neglect. Then, there's the potholes (especially in the Hub and Discoveryland).

The lights on the DLH are quite reminiscent of the state of the lighting on both the Yacht and Beach Club Resorts now.

The thing to realize is that many of the things you've pointed out have likely NOT been touched in any significant way in the 14 years the park has been open. Nothing at all. Just the elements and the abusive guests. Good thing you didn't head over to the Treehouse were the wood planks are rotting away and people could fall right thru at any moment.

Boy, did Jay Rasulo do a great job there.

The idiots in charge of the park now, Karl Holz and George Kalogridis (both WDW castoffs) have their work cut out for them ... you should email them a link to your photos.

But likely most of the worst stuff will be cleaned up in time for the media to descend this spring. The question is what the place will look like when the VIPs go home and the celebration winds down.

I wonder if Tony Baxter, and the amazing design team, cries when he visits the park he so lovingly created.

DLP is easily the most incredibly designed, detailed MK created. But it's also the absolute worst when it comes to upkeep ... and considering how bad the MK is, that's saying a lot!

Someone explain to me why the upkeep is SO bad in the first place. There's got to be more to the story than, "Disneyland Paris doesn't have the money to do it." Anyone want to explain?
