It is an island ("Fantasy Island"?) surrounded by a sea of madness.

DL is special to people for different reasons. I don't think you can narrow it down to one thing.

Disneyland is such a gem. Everytime I visit, I can't believe there are so many good attractions in such a small space. Compared to DCA, MK, Epcot, DHS, and AK...well, there is just no comparison. DL by far gets the most TLC of any of Disney's American theme parks. And, not to sound cliche, but DL is the only park that has Walt's touch...and it shows.

You probably grew up going to the park so in some ways it reminds of of the good times of your childhood, its also the best Theme Park in the world

I could probably tell you a bunch of personal reasons. I think what really makes it special ...is that is the original, and always will be.

It's so special to me due to Walt's incredible imagination. His ability to have a vision and create magical enviornments that take you away from your reality.

Re: why is Disneyland so special?

Aside from nostalgia about the park itself and things one has done in it--and that does play a big role--there are a few things that deserve mentioning, I think. It's really a huge mishmash of different factors that makes Disneyland so successful, but these are some of the most important ones, IMO.

                      1. Great ride value. Seriously, Disneyland has a lot of attractions. This isn't some park where a newcomer won't have anything more to do after half a day. This may be one of the smaller Disney parks, but it crams a huge amount of stuff into its nooks and crannies, with enough variety for all members of the family to find happiness, and best of all, it doesn't feel crammed.

                      2. That brings me to the next point--its charm. Disneyland's themes certainly vary quite a lot, but they all attempt to make the guests feel good and reassured, even if they're embarking on a "dangerous" adventure. The architecture, the smells, the size, the music, the characters, the layout...everything is very purposefully engineered to give off this vibe.

                      3. Attention to detail/quality. The successful parts of Disneyland don't give off any sort of cheap vibe. Almost no one will pick up on every tiny effort the Imagineers have made, but all those efforts together ensure that it's hard to find areas where they've dropped the ball.

                      4. Escapism. Disneyland takes you away. Other amusement parks tend to make feeble, infrequent attempts to plop you into a different world, but they're so half-hearted in this that you never really leave the real-world amusement park. At Disneyland, everything I love is crafted so that you can really trick yourself into thinking you're somewhere else. I mean, come on...does New Orleans Square look like a standard amusement park to you?

                      There are probably more...

I think just the overall atmosphere of it makes it special for me.

I like Disneyland because I get to fly through outer space, explore forbidden temples, go on a pirate adventure, ride on a runaway mine train, and visit points in the past and future... all in one day.

Where else but Disneyland could you do all that?
I am a rabid Disney fan. Possible future Imagineer (already designing rides for it)... I've only been to Disneyland. I'm hoping to go to Disney World this summer for the first time, and TDR might be possible in 3 years.

Abience, the combination of sights, sounds, smells etc. all add up to a sum that is greater than it's parts. I had a co-worker tell me that she wouldn't like Disneyland because she is not a "ride person" Then I told her it's not all about rides, I have fun just sitting in the hub eating a Dole whip and watching all the people go by.
