  • [Other] Food for thought about the Steve Martin movie in the Opera House

If you consider that this film has been playing for more than 3 years, an average of 4 times an hour for 10 hours a day, that comes to around 50,000 showings, give or take a few. Not bad for promotional fluff that was produced for a celebration that ended nearly 2 years ago. Makes me want Mr. Lincoln back even more.

    Thats a brilliant observation...good work.

Its really sad that I have been to DLR about once a year since I turned six (i'm now 25,) and I had never seen Mr. Lincoln.

I do hope that he comes back some day.

They actually could run both shows at the Opera House. The 50th could play in the lobby and Lincoln in the main ballroom.

both great shows, it was nice that the 50th had some overtime as my soon to be brother n law finally got to see it (didn't know it was there all these years) so i dragged him in.

That sounds like a great idea. The general public, however, is probably a lot more interested in seeing a show of many urban myths than something historical like Mr. Lincoln.

true, but the change was nice, and going in the opera house to see the walt disney story for so many years seemed to be nicely topped or completed with the 50th movie. hmmm decisions

Yeah, like they did with the Walt Disney Story Featuring Great Moments With Mr. Lincoln. However the 50th film would have to be shortened down quite a bit.

I think that the 50th film was nice for the celebration, but I REALLY am ready for something new. I know that Lincoln was one of my favorite attractions growing up. (I love history!) But I concede that today's kids are not interested. I would love something new and fresh. It would take some imagination and some money, but I think something appropriate could work there.

I love the past, but I want Disneyland to keep on looking to new and innovative attractions. If Lincoln comes back, I want him to answer questions from the audience!

I'm also ready for a change. I really do like the movie now but like you said it's been 2 years since the 50th. I think that they should change the movie every year. Change it up a bit. Maybe one year do a background story of the studio. Another year on the old animators. Stuff like that. I think the real Disney fans would appreciate films like that. I know I would.

One thing's for sure: the 50th show will be gone by the 55th. Al Lutz has been recently implying that Disney will treat the 55th with as much care and celebration as they do every fifth anniversary, and there's no way they would keep an attraction that's filled to the brim with references to the past anniversary 'celebration'. It wouldn't make sense, and would seem inexplicably outdated with the surrounding area being decorated differently. (since Main Street and the main gate always get the greatest decoration treatment with these sort of things)
My guess is that in "preparation" for the 55th, the exhibit and film will close and head to Yesterland probably a year from now (my guess is Labor Day 2009). Lincoln will most likely then return sometime in mid-2010 as one of the 55th's "offerings", or maybe something else, but it's delusional to think Disney will keep the 50th exhibit during the 55th anniversary...

I think as more and more of these "Walt" Creations keep getting updated (like The Subs), it would be nice to bring back something original.

This is precisely how rumors get started, but...

I heard a CM at the Opera House the other day tell a guest that the contract expires at the end of the year, and maybe something new will come in after that (I think he said something about February). Personally, I love the 50th movie and watch it pretty much every time I'm there, so I'm in no hurry to see it go.

I've been thinking about this... The first time I saw the "Steve from Garden Grove" film I was hit with a wave of nostalgia. Seeing the Matterhorn when it was just a bunch of steel girders brought back memories of driving past it when I was a kid and being filled with anticipation. (It was going to have real snow on it you know!) And I've noticed that the older the viewer is the more they seem to enjoy it. Especially if they are old-time Southern Californians and watched the park grow. I've had friends get positively misty.

So far I haven't seen anyone watching Mr. Lincoln overcome with childhood memories. Besides, when I heard Florida had more than one president I felt slighted somehow.
