  • [Pictures] The voice of Jiminy Cricket

Though, perhaps, only indirectly related to Disneyland Park, I think you'll be interested in this thread. The man who supplied the voice of Jiminy Cricket in Walt Disney's "Pinocchio" and sang the iconic "When You Wish Upon A Star" was Cliff Edwards. His is the voice you hear when passing through Sleeping Beauty's Castle. His personal life story is quite interesting and tragic... I'll not go into it here. He died a pauper with no one to claim his body. Disney paid for a burial in Vallhalla Cemetary in North Hollywood.

Victoria and I visited his gravesite today and paid our respects.

We also found another old friend...

"Yesterday, a man walked up to me and said, 'Isn't it a shame that Walt Disney couldn't be here to see this?' and I said, "He did see this, that's why it's here."

Wow, what a great thing to do Tom, did you leave the pennies? That's a fabulous tradition that has been forgotten now a days.

What do the pennies mean? What is the tradition?

Nice find and a very nice thing for you to do. I remember when Cliff Edwards died and how the Disney Co. stepped up and took care of things. Classy move on their part.

That's awesome Tom. I had no idea about this.

Wendygirl, I'm thinking the penny thing has to do with "Pennies from Heaven" but I can't be sure.

Very cool you left flowers for his grave Tom. His life was so famed and yet, so tragic. Thanks for posting this.

I used to play Cliff 'Ukelele Ike' Edwards records to my wife and infant daughter. It would always calm them both!

Bless you for leaving him flowers. I feel like you did it for all of us. Just hearing his voice makes me think of my very happy childhood.

That was a very kind gesture on your part. Cliff Edwards' voice has always delighted me as Jiminy Cricket through vinyl records whether if it's "I'm No Fool", "From All of Us, To All Of You", as one of the crows singing "When I See An Elephant Fly" and of course, "When You Wish Upon a Star" when visiting Disneyland, watching Pinocchio, or on vinyl/CD.

Also, Cliff did a version of "Singing In the Rain" long before the now famous version by the late Gene Kelly, too!
