  • [Question] HM Stretching Room Ghost Effect?

I have just recently been discovering more about the techniques behind Haunted Mansion effects but I can't seem to find any info on what technique is used to produced the hanging ghost in the stretching room.

Anyone have any details on this effect?

    Thanks.

For starters, it's not a ghost - just the ordinary, everyday corpse of our Ghost Host.

As for the way the effect is achieved, it's actually quite simple. When you enter the room and look up, you think you see the ceiling, but you're actually looking at a piece of special, thin, translucent cloth called a scrim. When you illuminate the scrim and keep everything behind it dark, it looks opaque, like a hard surface. If you paint a ceiling pattern on it and do that, it even can look like a ceiling. But it's just cloth. And if you turn off the lights illuminating the scrim and turn on the lights in the room above the scrim, you can see right through the cloth to the very real prop skeleton hanging in the rafters. Turn off the lights above and turn on the lights below again, and the ceiling reappears.

Thanks very much! It's amazing the look they can achieve with these technically simple effects executed in a careful way.

My apologies . I'm not all that well versed in the back story!

You're welcome! And yes, it's amazing how that attraction in particular implements effects that aren't all that fantastically complex in ways that are very convincing and enjoyable. (Although animatronics are pretty complex, of course.)

This is why HM is such a great ride... employing 100 year old theatrical tricks in new ways that make them seem like magic. There are a number of incredibly simple effects used throughout the ride.

These our actors, As I foretold you, were all spirits and Are melted into air, into thin air: And, like the baseless fabric of this vision, The cloud-capp'd towers, the gorgeous palaces, The solemn temples, the great globe itself, Yea, all which it inherit, shall dissolve And, like this insubstantial pageant faded, Leave not a rack behind. Or projections on smoke (confusing Pepper's Ghost in the ballroom)...

It's the same effect they use on Indiana Jones when you first enter one of the chambers.

Sometimes. To be a bit more specific, since all three rooms are actually the same room, scrims are used for some of the visual changes. If the room is set up one way, the painted scrims are lit; if you go through another, the paintings behind them are lit.

Right. But isn't that one less convincing, because there is more than one scrim behind one another, and then you can see through more than one?

Or is that another thing that could be fixed with a refurb?

Mmm, I'm not sure. It's a very minor effect, and not one that's ever caught my eye in a negative way.

You've never looked up after the Ghost Host says "Of course...there's always my way"?

It's the body that hangs above you in the strecthing room when the lights go out.
