  • [Chat] The History of the Lincoln AA's-Some Quick Questions

Now, Al has just described the Mr. Lincoln figure to be brand new for this special winter return of the show.

This had me wondering about how many versions of the Mr. Lincoln figure there were.

We know the original came out of the 1964 New York World's Fair.

Everything is a blank for me up until now, with a new figure just arriving.

Has Walt's original figure been used all this time or was he replaced at some point?

    Thanks!

the figure was updated in the 80's and then again for the 2000 change so this new one is the forth.

The original one that disneyland was acutally the back-up from the worlds fair... so in all there were 5.

By updated do you mean just like some improvements to the existing figure? Or a completely new one?

whole new figure... in the 80's the new figure had "Compliance" which allowed better movement... and for 2000 the figure was completely redone with the help of a university to create the most realistic figure possible

This original version of the attraction opened with the rest of the New York World's Fair on April 22, 1964. It and the rest of the Fair closed with the first season on October 18, 1964, then reopened for the second and final season on April 21, 1965 and closed on October 17, 1965. The State of Illinois Pavilion, both its exterior and interiors, were demolished and removed. The same can be said for the other exhibits within the Pavilion, including "Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln". Only valuable artifacts, collections, and exhibits made their way back to the State of Illinois or elsewhere around the world. For many years, all that remained of the original version of "Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln" are the memories of those who saw it, and the photos, audio and film recordings.
While the second and final season of the 1964-1965 New York World's Fair was continuing in Flushing Meadows Corona Park (the spring, summer, and fall of 1965), a duplicate of the attraction was being made by Walt Disney and his Imagineers.
Years after the duplicate was created, it was discovered that the original Lincoln figure had been packed in a crate, shipped back to California and mysteriously forgotten for decades. After it was unearthed it formed the centerpiece of a 2005-2006 traveling exhibit entitled "Behind the Magic: 50 Years of Disneyland" where it was exhibited along with its packing crate. The figure was displayed without clothing or skin except for the iconic head. This original figure had never been seen by the public since its appearance at the New York World's Fair and had been believed lost.
