  • [Question] Has Disney gotten better or worse over the years?

The last couple of weeks I have enjoyed reading David Koenig's books called Mouse Tales (Bonaventure Press, 2006)and More Mouse Tales. (Bonaventure's Press, 2002). I recommend them.

At the end of More Mouse Tales, Mr. Koenig talks about how Disneyland has suffered from corporate greed in recent years. That DL purposely lost great employees, cut staffing, to became more profit driven. As a result, the employees do not care as before and the park is less safe.

At the end of More Mouse Tales, Mr. Koenig recommends that the (1) the Park regain team spirt (2) Remember the park is a show (and not a shop); and (3) make sure the guests are the top priority. (pp. 216, 217.)

I started going to the parks regularly a few years ago. IMO, it seems the park has met all these criterea. But, I do not have memory of the 1980's to compare.

What do you long time park visiters think? Has the park gotten worse over the years? Has it gotten better these past few years? Are the CM's team oriented today?

better in terms of more activites to do..
worse in terms of environment.. I personally don't think management nowadays does enough to keep the CMs always perky as they used to be and I have seen the park dirtier each time I go and there is something about High School Musical and the new celebrate "parade" that just doesn't spark those magic moments.

Overall I think environment is more important than what the rides have to offer because the rides always offer the same thing but the environment makes the difference between a good day and a magical day.

On a note to what you said: Yes I have noticed that CMs have been more oriented to getting there job done rather than worrying about guests..and I wouldn't know what to say about the team spirit.

    So yea...worse

Worse overall, compared to the 1980's.

I was at the park for the 25th, 30th, 35th and 50th anniversaries. I also went for a short time in 91. The park in 91 was a MAJOR disappointment. The park was dirtier than I had ever seen and it was relatively empty (went about the 4th week of May). Walked on to every single (open) attraction.

When I took my kids for the 50th I was pleasantly surprised that the "magic" had somewhat made a return to Disneyland. It still wasn't what it was in the 80's but a step in the right direction.

Interesting. Funny you should say 1991. Koenig writes that though in 1991, the CM's received an award as theme park being thorough on preventitive maintenance, that is when the park changed many of their policies. Sometime around 1991 they stopped preventitive maintenance and waited for parts to break.

my grandparents attended opening day in 1955, that was probably the worst it ever was. rides breaking down. cast members tired and angry. litter. crying(even adults).

my mom went in, about, 1965, and says she remembers it being very well kept and together.

but the 1980's were undoubtedly the golden years. most all attractions were active. it was mostly clean. it wasn't just all kid rides anymore. cast members were; "Yippie!"

so yes, it has gotten bad, but it's been worse,.

                    ..but it's getting better.

I think it's gotten wrost to. They cut alot of entertment down alot. They don't have alot of characters in the parks like they did back in 2002 and 2003 or even in 2005. 2005 was the time when they had alot of characters out.

Re: Has Disney gotten better or worse over the years?

60's, 70's and 80's awesome and then in '91 things really changed. My wife and I couldn't put our finger on it exactly but it just felt different. (It was the begining of the Pressler era I think) I do remember these changes the most because it was one of the big things for us in the Summer.

Summer Big Band shows were 7 days a week with quality name Big Bands like Lionel Hampton, Tex Beneke, Buddy Morrow, Peanuts Hucko, etc. After '91 they went to Fri-Sat and Sunday only with wannabe bands. For us the Summer evenings without this really drained our desire to go to the Park everyday.

The stores carried stuff that really was worth shopping for, We did A LOT of shopping there for Christmas every year, then it turned sort of generic, no imagination. We stopped shopping there.

The Park seemed unkept, lackluster, no energy. We drifted to going about once a month instead of 3-4 times a week (we worked about two miles away and always made plans to go in the Park for a couple of hours, for whatever reason.

The PartyGras parade, in '95 I think, seemed to revive things a bit as did the Lion King Parade, but there were a bunch mis-fires as well, i.e. replacing the Electrical Parade with Light Magic....bleck!

When Matt Ouimett replaced Pressler and he brought Greg Emmer with him they really got the Park shaped up for the 50th and I thought we were saved, sadly both are gone now and the Park just seems to be idling for now. I hope for the day when the Park seemed as fresh and energized as it was in the 60's, 70' and the 80's. So IMO todays Park is worse than it was in the 80's and before.

This has always been a "hot topic" but one aspect that gets neglected is the overall public. Disney has slid in many aspects... but so has the audience it is catering to. It's focus and business practices have changed, but so has the standards, focus and practices of those it does business with... in short everyone has changed. Life moves on.

I began going around 1997 and I remember the "good" parades with classic disney characters on elaborate floats and now its Celabrate! which just leaves a mess of Mickey confettii until late at night

Re: Has Disney gotten better or worse over the years?

I believe Disneyland has gotten better over the years. Now I can't talk about it in the 80's because I wasn't alive back then. I can really only talk about 2004 and later.

During 2004, nothing really changed because they were refurbishing everything for the 50th, ecept for the addition of TOT.

In 2005, the wonderful 50th came. I can't believe they pulled it off so fabulously. Not only that but they added Buzz, Remember which was the best fireworks ever made, and the 50th signs on every ride. Not only that, but they refurbished the much needed Space Mountain.

As we enter 2006, the 50th still goes on and we finally see construction for the new Finding Nemo Submarine voyage.

2007 went through with the opening of Finding Nemo, the construction of Midway Mania, Monsters INC. opens, and Disney finally helps DCA by announcng th 1.1 billion dollar expansion. Not only that, but the Year of a Million Dreams starts which I think was a really good promotion.

2008 starts off with the continuation of the Year of a Million Dreams, the Dream Suite opening, the confimation that Sleeping Beauty castle diorama is returning, TSMM opens up, BSC opens reveilng the future of DCA, and the Sun Wheel get transformed to the Fun Wheel and the GOB get a wondeful overlay. This is one big step in the right direction.

Not only did the parks get better but so did the CMs. I found that they have been nicer and stop by to ask how our day is. Also, I have seen many more characters then back in the early years. They also interact with you more.

Also, entertainment has gotten better to. I feel Fantasmic is great, Remember is awesome, and both the BPB and the Paly Parade are great. I may be the only one but I like Celebrate.

So as to make it short, I think Disneyland has gotten much better over the year. Not only by the ride count, but by entertainment, and the CM's and character count.
