  • [Question] Price to ride Pirates

This is just a little question to settle a bet between a friend and I.

How much would you be willing to pay, per ride, for Pirates of the Caribbean.

The options pretty much speak for themselves.

Have to be less than 5 bucks since a park pass is 72 bucks.

Depends on how much park admission costs, whether or not other attractions also cost money, and whether or not I currently have a job. Assuming admission prices stay as high as they are, no other attractions charge guests, and I'm not bringing in much income...perhaps I'll say $7, the money tree being in its current state. And I'd be more likely to only ride it once per visit, sadly. I suppose we're fortunate that no one, even Disney, would charge a price that steep per ride!

Anyway, interesting thread idea. I've no doubt some entertaining discussions could arise.

I like the ride but the last couple times there has been something missing each time. Last time the Davy Jones mist screen was gone and we just went through a pitch black section, it was really kind of creepy.

I love the ride... but anything above 5 bucks is just too much. If your'e there with a family of four, you'd blow like 40 bucks just on that one ride. If you had to pay those prices for all E ticket rides, you could easily spend over $1,000 in one day at Disneyland.

"Disneyland will never be completed. It will continue to grow as long as there is imagination left in the world."
            -Walt Disney

"I do not like to repeat successes, I like to go on to other things."
            -Walt Disney

"We did it, Disneyland, in the knowledge that most of the people I talked to thought it would be a financial disaster - closed and forgotten within the first year."
            -Walt Disney

"It's kind of fun to do the impossible."
            -Walt Disney

"I only hope that we don't lose sight of one thing - that it was all started by a mouse."

$0 I'll just skip that one if if costs to ride over and above entrance price.

That's a good point about multiple guests riding together, James...I wasn't even thinking about that! My $7 vote still seems about right if I'm just by myself or with other adults who'll be paying for themselves, but if I were taking young'uns who were relying on me to pay for their tickets, too, I'd definitely need it to be in the <$5 range, and even then, it'd still be an extra-special treat for them.

Well Knott's has an upcharge ride. Despite paying for park admission, if you want to go on the screamin' swing you have to pay $5 extra.

The arcades at Disneyland are also extra and people will gleefully plop down another $5 for those (that shooting exposition especially).

Factoring for inflation, the cost of an E ticket was about $4.50 in 1972.

If you follow the premise of the 10 ride average in a day, then $72 would basically be $7.20 per ride.

What if Pirates of the Caribbean was a standalone attraction like the Star Trek Experience? The tickets for those were over $30 if I remember right. Would you pay $30 for one ride on Pirates of the Caribbean?

I wish I had ridden it then. I really miss that. I would love it if that tunnel went back to being pitch black again!

I voted $6. The reason for this is when I went to the Orange County Fair this summer, if I recall 40 ride tickets cost $50 and the best rides took 5 tickets. POTC should cost as least as much as the best carnival ride so I think it should be $6. Maybe $6.50.

                      Re: Price to ride Pirates

I went with $7 assuming this is some vacuum where I just walked up and someone asked how much I thought a ticket would be worth. It really doesn't take into account main gate admission... I just think I'd pay $7 to do it once and then probably not bother with a repeat.

I assume this will lead to a discussion about the old ticket system and if it could/would/should be brought back or not.

If PotC were in Vegas attached to a casino with a well-themed Pirate bar stocked with characters, a Pirate museum, unique gift shop, etc. like Star Trek the Experience was, then, yeah, $30 would be fine. IIRC, you could ride ST all day with a special ticket or stayed in the Hilton.

Isn't the Shooting Exposition still 25 cents per play?

Maybe a dollar or 2. I'm not a huge fan. But it'd be nice on a really hot day.
                            Good morning, son
                            In twenty years from now
Maybe we'll both sit down and have a few beers
And I can tell you 'bout today
And how I picked you up and everything changed
                            It was pain
                            Sunny days and rain
I knew you'd feel the same things...

The original discussion I was having was about how the ticket system would never work unless Disneyland replaced all their rides. People would not be willing to pay more than a couple bucks for a 40 year old ride.
