  • News Maglev Train from Vegas to Anaheim slightly closer?

    http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-maglev17-2009sep17,0,1322147.story\

This is new news to me about the LONG proposed train from Vegas to Anaheim, and I want to say it seems like it's moving forward, but I really don't know. $45 million out if $12 billion doesn't seem like much.
Anyway, anyone want to speculate on this? If the ending is Anaheim, how close to Disneyland will this be? What kind of timeline are we looking at here? Discuss!

(Also, the way I found out about this was Conan talking about it on the Tonight Show during last Thursday's monologue.)

The ending will be extremely close to Anaheim, and a City of Anaheim monorail system will link the resort to ARTIC (Anaheim Intermodal Regional Transportation Center) where the high speed train will end.

For moire information, check out the City of Anaheim's website, www.anaheim.net

Because its still only for the planning and impact studies.. people were hoping the rail money tagged in the stimulus plan would kick start these programs.. but as you can see.. even that money isn't enough to get a project like this actually close to being actually funded for construction.

To me, the joke about the "Vegas to Anaheim" train is its name. I think it would be a siphon in the carotid artery of Disney's local customer base.

Check Mass Transit to the Disneyland resort thread, too.

This high speed train for CA nonsense is not much more than a pipe dream.

The enviro-whacko's have already put it on indefinite hold by the courts in NorCal and no one has the money to fund it anyway. :greedy:

Plus way too many people are killed by our current slow trains (though yes, they usually are Darwin Award winners that were walking on the tracks while listening to their I-Pods and such).

Maybe in 40 to 50 years we might see them, but I'm not holding my breath or voting to waste one penny of my tax dollars to go towards them...

            Keep dreaming!!! :lmao:

The California High Speed Rail project is different from the Vegas-Anaheim maglev.

The former has more likelihood of being constructed than the latter.

Just last fall voters approved a ballot measure to fund engineering and plans.

Funding for the 405 Freeway carpool lane and improvements at the 101/23 Freeway interchange are among a $625 billion in "IMBY" - "In My Back Yard" - projects unveiled today by Mobility 21, a coalition of Southern California transportation leaders.

Officials hope the $625 billion will come from the federal government as part of a six-year transportation funding bill Congress is developing, the coalition said in a statement, which described "IMBY" the list of projects as "must do" solutions to the region's transportation issues.
Also on the wish list is the first phase of a proposed 800-mile, high-speed train line between Anaheim and Union Station in downtown Los Angeles; and a project to extend the Metro Rail to L.A's Westside.

I agree with rest of your post that the high-speed train is a dream, but this paragraph assumes the trains would be at grade level. As a mag-lev, it would be on a raised, private right-of-way.

Sure, it could be in a tunnel...but why tack on untold billions (or trillions) for that privilege?

Oh that's right--'cause it ain't gonna happen either way, so we can just dream on!

The CA high speed rail envisions grade seperation by digging a ditch through Burbank-Glendale. Put a cement roof over it, and it's a tunnel.

That's a lot of rail for cities that are just 20 miles apart.

The major problem is getting from Anaheim to Victorville. Too much present development.

Let's see if we can make it there:
                            1. Northwest along Metrolink/Amtrak lines to Union Station. This makes it attractive to all who can get to Union Station. Then alongside The Bernardino Line. This line does some interesting turns. If they can be straightened out -- say, along Ramona Blvd instead of Southeast along Valley, then Northeast along Baldwin Park Bl., for example -- it might work.
                            2. From Union Station along the Riverside line. Instead of going to Riverside, though, the line stays eastward (along AMTRAK) and stops at Ontario Airport. Then, onto San Berdoo Station. Then, along The 215 North and the tracks already there. If Riverside really needs to be in on this deal, then I suggest creating a new terminal on the south side of the airport, or adding tracks on the west side of the airport connecting back to the Riverside Line. this alternative could then link up to San Berdoo as well.
                            3. The Metrolink "Inland Empire-Orange County Line" is about 1.5 miles ESE of ARTIC. Maglev could travel ESE to this right of way, then follow it to San Bernardino Metrolink/Amtrak stations. Then, follow the tracks along the 215. This also has the added benefit of continuing along Metrolink/Amtrak to Union Station. Heck, this line AND one of the other two could be built to create a loop in SoCal from Union Station to San Berdoo to Anaheim. Might as well build it right, if at all.

As the Disneyland Monorail proves, trains don't have to go in a straight line! LOL
