  • [Question] Monks in Disneyland Resort with shopping bags.

Recently saw monks in DCA with Disneyland shopping bags. I thought they looked like Tibetin Monks and later learned the Dali Lama was in the USA. So maybe they were associated with him, I don't know.

But I had to wonder what was in the shopping bags. How does that work? Don't they practice not wanting stuff?

Would love to hear from anyone who knows what they purchased. And of course the spiritual influences on consumerism at Disneyland might have merit.

Very interesting...Yeah shopping bags and monks don't mix unless it's essentials, something that the DLR doesn't sell.

Disneyland,Shopping Bags and Monks sounds like a real oxymoron to me!

Even monks have families... just because they have chosen a life of simplicity doesn't mean members of their family who are unable to travel to Disneyland wouldn't like a souvenir. A child's smile is a universal display of joy in any language...

As to the Dali Lama he learned how to do a fist bump the other day (yes I am being serious it was on CNN). Now it's only a matter of time before we see the pope walking around with an Ipod!

*I'm not getting into a religious discussion which I know is against the rules... I just found the fist bump lesson comical, and also an example of the belief that we never stop learning!

I watched them playing with the light up toys and lightsabers when I was working. It was really funny because there was an older monk who has exceptionally curious, trying to figure out how they all worked. Cute to watch.

While I am well aware not all monks practice kung fu I would love to watch two monks do a pre-parade traditional sword demonstration using light sabers! ... even Jedis would likely watch and learn!

We have a Buddhist temple in the High Desert, and very rarely will you see monks around town. I've seen them at the gas station and at Wal-mart. Sometimes people need things. I guess sometimes people need DL
techskip, the thought of the Dali Lama doing a fist bump just puts a big smile on my face! Once I saw full-on Roman Catholic nuns ooh-ing and ahh-ing over ice cream cakes at a Baskin Robbins and was grinning just as much

Sorry to stray off topic and hotlink from cnn but this picture is worth a thousand words! You can see the smile on the Dali Lama's face. CNN also has a commentary about it from the mayor who initiated the fist bump (in the political section which is why I did not link it). You can find it by searching Dali Lama fist bump in Google News. The video was hysterical! I wasn't a big fan of the Hello Dali joke but I think the fist bump was appropriate.

Yeah, from the look on his face I don't think the "Hello Dali" amused him like the fist bump did.

I appreciate hearing a bit about what toys interested them.

He's probably thinking to himself, "Oh, yes. I've never heard that one, before."
