  • [Chat] Disney Channel and Disneyland

I couldn't find anywhere else to post this, but, I remember when I was little, they had all sorts of little short commercials on the Disney channel about Disneyland. It seems after California Adventures opened, they cared no more about it. Plus, after that, they canceled the old cartoons they used to have on Disney channel each morning. Is it me, or has Disney ruined yet another thing Walt Disney created...? Now it's all about Hannah Montana or the Jonas Brothers... I read something on the internet, and one of the comments involved something around the topic that Disney doesn't care for it's parks anymore, and only cares for it's money and Hannah Montana and the Jonas Brothers... Explaining why I never will watch the Disney channel again... Plus, how they have scattered Pixar stuff all over their parks, and that Hannah Montana stuff. I really am starting to get sick of it.

I'm done with my ranting, and I couldn't find where to post this, but I just felt like expressing my opinions.

Discuss if you want, or if it get's locked, it's fine.

Don't they still do those Disney365 bits on the Disney Channel?
I actually heard this said by a CM over the loud speakers at Big Thunder in 1995, "Please do not sit on the rocks. You will fall...and you will die."

Well, no, actually, well, not recently. Occasionally I see it on because of my younger brothers, but even still, nothing involving Disneyland or the cartoons, or even Walt Disney himself. :-/

Welcome, theoretical and churros9. I say welcome because by your post count, you seem to be relatively new, and I've never had the chance to interact with either of you.

Over the years, we've had quite a few threads on this general topic. But it's always a good one to chew over.

I don't know if you, like many of us, pine for the days of "Vault Disney" - the show that used to be on in the late night hours, featuring old Walt Disney shows and MM Club shows and the like.

We ranted for pages and pages, sent e-mail petitions to Disney, etc, etc...

        And here we sit.

I'm not sure exactly when things changed...but it seems that when the Disney Channel was on a pay-tier, and not part of most basic cable, that there was higher quality and emphasis on more of the things that both you and I care about.

Anyway, just know that you have touched a nerve with a lot of folks here.

        Again, welcome!
God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.

I agree. I miss the classic Disney shows, too, like The Rescuers and Buzz Lightyear. I'm a Miley and Jonas fan, but I just don't care for their shows. I hate that they're on Disney channel. We can only hope that someday, they'll make Disney channel right and learn from their mistakes, like with California Adventure(only Disney channel is in worse shape than DCA was/is). I think the only thing thats ok on Disney channel is Mickey Mouse Clubhouse on Playhouse Disney. tigger & pooh are okay, but I hate seeing that little girl and her dog with that fake, annoying bark. They could've made it an equally good kids show with Christopher Robin. The old winnie the pooh show was better, with them being puppets, back in the time of Bear & the Big Blue House. For now, all we Disney fans can do is spread the word(people assume Disney fans love Disney channel, someone the other day asked me what my favorite show there was, I told them i didnt watch it. They replied, "how can you be a disney fan?" So I said, "I don't watch it because I'm a Disney fan."), and not watch Disney channel(except for the classic shows, when they have them on. I think the only thing left is Little Mermaid, occasionally, and Lilo & Stitch, which is at least better than Wizards of WaverLand or whatever.).

That's a race that's too close to call, IMHO.

I once met an adorable little girl while waiting in line for Splash Mountain. She was extremely energetic, so she would babble on and on to me and my friend like we had been her friends forever.

Happy to see the little girl so excited about Disneyland, I decided to ask her what her favorite Disney movie was.

She pondered this for a moment, and then turned to me with a big smile and said -

              "The Jonas Brothers!!"

And a part of me died inside.

I would scream. (Don't get me wrong, I like the Jobros music, i was at the concert when they filmed the movie, im in the movie, too, you can see my poster, i just dont think they're authentic Disney)

You know, there are probably people around here who would argue that those shows pale in comparison to the even older ones, such as Duck Tales and Goof Troop. There are also some people that would argue that it's just a matter of what generation you grew up in, and once you're out of their target audience you won't like anything new, and only like the shows you grew up with due to the nostalgia factor.

I, however, think that the true classics, the truly great shows, are ones that kids and their parents can enjoy together. Everyone here knows the carousel story, right? Well, the principal of having entertainment that the entire family can enjoy at the same time isn't just to be applied to the parks, but to the shows as well. This principal is what made Disney so successful, and the reason Disney is losing popularity among teens and adults these days is because they've forgotten about the idea completely. They're busy trying to get their products to appeal to this-and-that audience, when they should be trying to appeal to the audience.

There's only one recent show worth watching nowadays, and that's Phineas and Ferb. It seems to be the only one of the new shows that is legitimately funny. And best of all, the kids that star in it are innocent, fun-loving, polite, and honest. It seems like in every single one of Disney's recent sitcoms, the kids are snotty, bratty, selfish, and materialistic. Yes, they learn their lesson at the end, but watching these kids act so terribly on the way is just way too painful for me to watch.

As for Disneyland commercials, the fact that they don't play them anymore doesn't really bother me. I mean, if you lived in the middle of Texas and your family didn't have enough time/money to fly/drive to Orlando/Anaheim, seeing a commercial for the parks would kind of bum you out, wouldn't it?

Disney Channel is so bad, I don't even know why we bother to pay for it. The only time I'll sit to watch is when they show a clip of the Disney Parks. Other than that, no way. The humor is corny and the obsessive fans of Hannah Montana and the Jonas Brothers are just too much (in a bad way). I liked Toon Disney because they showed the older cartoons like House of Mouse, but then they replaced it with some Disney XD crap. Disney seriously needs to cater to other people, other than the obnoxious little kids who obsess over their shows.

^ I agree, I really miss ToonDisney. Now you can never catch original shows, they won't play them. I loved House of Mouse, it was a nice modern way to make animated shorts with Mickey, his pals, and the rest of the Disney gang.

So it's not just us "older" folks missing the "Vault Disney" stuff. Some younger folks are obviously missing some of the more recent programming as well.

***leaves computer to watch the Suite Life of Zack and Cody and That's So Raven marathon***

                            NOT.

And I knew of Miley Cyrus's Dad before she became Hannah Montana.

When I was younger, I LOVED Disney Channel. All the shows were great -- Kids Incorporated, Darkwing Duck, The Little Mermaid Animated Series, TailSpin, Goof Troop, Mickey Mouse Club, Magical World of Disney -- and I fondly remember watching them with my parents, grandmas, and younger siblings. I even liked some of the more recent shows (Lilo and Stitch, Kim Possible, Flash Forward, and Even Stevens stand out in my mind). It seems that after Zoog Disney went away, so did the quality programing. I dig Phineas and Ferb and I can even force my way through an episode of Wizards...but I find it hard to see where JONAS and the later seasons of Hannah Montana connect to Disney values or could even be considered family programming.

Disney Channel was recently dropped from my apartment's cable package and the only thing I miss is being able to watch old school DCOMs (which were few and far between anyway).

I love DisneyChannel...I think that the shows are fun to watch, BUT I would like to see some of the 'classic' shows back. Just today I put in a dvd of some old classic Goofy cartoons for my 2 year old brother and he sat through the whole thing.

New stuff is fine and good..but keep some of the classics around..a line from Disney's Pixar's Cars come to mind..."stick with the classics, man!"

You know that something's seriously wrong with Disney's brand management when so few people who patronize Disneyland would also watch The Disney Channel. The whole putrid, soulless, and creatively-bankrupt company makes me sick, anymore. It's really an unholy abomination at this point, totally devoid of the imagination that was once the core competency of the organization.

I see clips about the parks on Disney Channel all the time.

Maybe not about Disneyland specifically - but the kids doing previews/discussions/interviews about the new stuff in the parks is on there.

My perspective (34 yo father of 2yo and 4yo) is that Disney channel is great. The only thing my kids watch is playhouse Dis in the mornings and they love it. Plus, if your looking for Disney Talent, listen to the songs these shows put out. One time and they are stuck in your head. I haven't seen higglytown in a year and I still have some songs stuck in my head.

Also, they have a weekly Monday movie. Thumbs Up. Hannah Montana, HSM and Jonas must be good because they bring in tons of viewers. You may not care for them but there are plenty who love it.

I'm sure it's there best recruiting tool.
