SoCal is an area that only is able to keep a water park open 6-7 months of the year. I don't think Disney wants a "half" park here but you never know.

I think the area you are talking about is south of Katella and east of Harbor Blvd. There is a large employee parking lot there and strawberry fields south of that. The land is large enough to build another whole theme park on. Another possible location would be the parking lot south of the Disneyland Hotel and west of the Paradise Pier hotel. That's smaller than the first one, but probably large enough for a water park. The other consideration is that there are quite a few water parks in southern California already. Knott's has one just a few miles from Disneyland, a second one in Chula Vista and a third in Palm Springs, Magic Mountain in Valencia has Hurricane Harbor, there is Raging Waters in Diamond Bar, Wild Rivers in Irvine, and there is a new one under construction in Temecula called Splash Canyon. So that's 7 water parks already in southern California, and I heard Legoland wants to build one too, if they do that will make 8. I think most are open only from about May until the end of September. Who knows whether Disney wants to get into that market or not. If they build a third park in Anaheim I hope it's WESTCOT, the western equivalent of EPCOT or something along that line.

One consideration might be an indoor/outdoor park. This one in Japan has a roll open roof. Pretty cool.

And roof open May thru September in Anahiem?

Maybe a Jules Verne theme - like the Volcano island base in 20K.

Placing the park within walking distance of the Disney owned hotels would be a plus. If the parking garage was doubled the Water Park and DTD could use it, too.

The end result of a super themed Disney water park would probably eliminate a few weaker competitors if they were near enough.

While I agree with Bob that I'd rather see Westcot than a water park, I personally think it's a mistake to view this as a "zero-sum" decision. (To be fair, it's a mistake Disney seems to make a lot...). But the opportunity here is to LEAP forward with DLR, rather than to INCH along.

SO - why not? Why not build Westcot and a state-of-the-art indoor/outdoor waterpark that completely blows the competition out of the water? (sorry about that pun...)

Seriously, risk-taking is what gave us DL in the first place, and WDW as well. Zero-sum makes sense when you are short of capital, and cash flow is weak. Disney is not in that kind of condition, in fact they are pretty much the opposite.

It's time for them to completely re-energize their model of DLR, moving from cash-cow thinking to growth thinking. All it takes is cash and imagination to envision DLR's footprint getting much closer to that of WDW.

why not have the water park be in the parking lot for downtown Disney on the corner of Katela and Disneyland Dr. would make a water park about the same size as the entire paradise pier area.

There just isn't any room unless you take out Downtown Disney (highly unlikely).

Also, where is there room for a 3rd full size park?

Perhaps it's because it gets too cold here to support a water park being opened all year long? On many mornings in the winter when I drive to work in Irvine it can be as cold as 33 degrees. Sometimes colder. On these days it doesn't get warmer than the upper 50s to the low 60s. Sure there are some warm days but a lot of the winter is just way too cold.

I totally agree with you, Anaheim Disney Resort needs a water park. I worked at Raging Waters during the summer and have been there so many times that it's kinda boring now. Knotts Soak City in my opinion is way too small and you could do everything in probably 2 hours with no crowds. Hurricane Harbor is just okay, never been just what I heard from people. But the problem you are facing with another water park in SoCal is like what people on here have already said is the weather, it's only really hot like end of May beginning of June to like the beginning of October.

I'm dusting one off here for appropriateness:

Right now DLR simply does not have the money to even warrant the concept for a 3rd park. They just dropped a billion into the DCA revitalization and another 4billion to aquire Marvel. My bet is that Disney is patiently waiting for the lease contracts to run out on the remaining property owners on that block so that they can build an appropriately sized venue. This probably won't happen within the next 10 years though. Disney obviously has their priorities elsewhere.

Because of limited space .. I don't think Disney would make a water park a priority .. with the following in SoCal already:

1. Knott's Soak City (10 minutes away)
2. Wild Wet in Irvine (20 minutes away)
3. Raging Rivers in San Dimas (30 minutes away)
4. Hurricane Harbour on the grounds of Magic Mountain. (An Hour+ away)

If I may politely say ... in light of some earlier comments....

and let say this with a laugh ....

we really need to stop playing accounteneers like we know Disney's finances. It's not poor little Mom&Pop operation .. lets stop acting like they can't afford this .. can't afford that .. in any thread.

This is a multi BILLION dollar entertainment conglomerate ... who spends hundreds of millions to billions of dollars from ABC, to Fox Family network .. to Go.com .. to Marvel, etc, etc.

They got the money power to wield what they want .....

the parks are not top priority!

It all comes down to what they decide is a priority.

Simple.

Period.

Maybe in like 10-20 years but I don't see this happening soon. But hey if its indoors it would be a great addition to the Disneyland Resort.

If I were Disney, I would never back down from building a water park because there were others nearby. If Disney built a water park on the same caliber of Blizzard Beach or Typhoon Lagoon, I would never visit another of the water parks.

If Disney ever does develop any of their Anaheim property into a third gate, I really hope it is a water park. Furthermore, if they themed it to Jules Verne and 20,000 Leagues I would love it.

I would imagine California earthquake codes make it prohibitively difficult to accommodate large parking areas. They would need a lot of levels of parking, because I don't think they can manage with only one level.
