  • [Question] Steam Train Refurb (Merged Threads)

So, the Disneyland website is now showing that the 'steam trains' will be closed for refurb. Does this mean the DL Railroad and if so why doesn't it just say that?

Yes, the Disneyland Railroad will be closed. I don't know why they are saying "steam trains".

For anyone curious, it doesn't have to do with the railroad itself, but rather the work being done in the Splash tunnel. As a result, the railroad is shut down because of the close proximity of the work (just like the monorails down whenever something is being worked on near the beamway; ex: Subs, DCA. However, unlike the monorail, the railroad will not go into "shuttle mode", even though WDW did that with their railroad at one point in years past).

"Steam Trains" is the Operational name for the Disneyland Railroad.

Lately they've been posting the refurbisment schedule directly from the internal calendar to the Website. That is why you
get names like "Steam Trains" and details such as Columbia's deck oiling.

What exactly are they doing in the tunnel? Any ideas?

My sources are only train CMs, so they don't know what work is being performed on Splash--only that they can't run the trains. Since Splash doesn't need to be shut down, it doesn't sound very major.

So as not to be confused between the steam driven trains (the DLRR) and the OTHER trains in use at the park, namely the roller coasters which are also known as trains.
For example, this definition from Wiki:

A roller coaster train describes the vehicle(s) which transports passengers around a roller coaster's circuit. More specifically, a roller coaster train is made up of two or more "cars" which are connected by some sort of specialized joint. It is called a "train" because the cars follow one another around the track -- the same reason as for a railroad train. Individual cars often vary in design and can carry anywhere from one to eight or more passengers each.

"Shuttle" mode is when the train goes to the available areas, then goes in reverse to avoid areas under construction. They did this with the monorail when they removed the monorail pylons whilst working on FNSV.

Yes, they burn bio-diesel (2% diesel fuel 98% vegetable oil; from the park) for their boilers as a replacement for Diesel #2 oil.

They ran the DL Monorail in Shuttle Mode when they were working on the Finding Nemo show building addition, but they didn't remove any of the pylons or beams. Same thing with all the construction work on California Adventure when they were working too close to the track structure.

They could have run the trains during the day and done building work overnight like they did with California Screamin' during the TSMM construction, but they didn't want to chance a hot 600VDC power rail and the moving train too close to the workers and the scaffolding - too easy for a worker to forget that the Monorails are running and walk inside the clearance envelope of the oncoming train, and that goof could get... really messy. So they closed the beam in the work zones.

I don't recall DL ever running the DLRR trains in Shuttle Mode with guests on board. It could certainly be done but they never have, they only back the trains in an emergency.
