  • [Question] Which road to take?

We're thinking of driving down in April. Trying to figure out which route would be best to take. Essentially we'd be leaving from Calgary, AB and could take the I-5 or I-15.
Has anyone driven these routes and knows which is really faster? We drove the I-15 in Oct 2008 and I wouldn't mind bypassing those crazy red mountains. In my dream world the roads would be straight and not very busy so I could do more driving and let my husband has some breaks :o) We are planning to probably take 2-3 days to drive to Disneyland and don't plan to drive all day and night maybe 8-12 hour stretches, especially since we'll have a 22 month old and an almost 3 year old.
We were thinking of flying but flights haven't come down yet and spending $2200 for 3 flights and having my youngest sitting on my lap for a 3.5 hour flight isn't a great idea.
Does anyone have any suggestions on the best way to get to Disneyland?

    Re: Which road to take?

Well, from what I can tell from google maps...

    I-15 = 1,904 miles
    I-5 = 2,161 miles

So if you go I-15 you save 257 miles which comes out to about 3 hours (give or take 30 minutes depending on your speed).

Map via I-15 (google maps recommended route)
    Map via I-5

Our revels now are ended. These our actors, As I foretold you, were all spirits and Are melted into air, into thin air: And, like the baseless fabric of this vision, The cloud-capp'd towers, the gorgeous palaces, The solemn temples, the great globe itself, Yea, all which it inherit, shall dissolve And, like this insubstantial pageant faded, Leave not a rack behind. We are such stuff As dreams are made on, and our little life Is rounded with a sleep. mycroft16 on Twitter

I-5 may be longer in miles, but you should find it straighter in road.

Another option is to drive to a HUB airport n' hop a flight the rest of the way.
Just countin' the days til the next visit!

I would probably take the I-15 route. As Mycroft stated it's a shorter route, and I would think more scenic. Plus you could drive through Las Vegas. I live near Seattle and have driven I-5 down. It's an easy drive, It's scenic too, but once you get into CA it's not very pretty to look at.

              thanks for the info
Are speed limits pretty much the same on both roads. If I remember correctly I-15 was mostly in the 80s...which we found crazy cause here the max highway speed equals about 68 mph but every goes about 73mph. Is the I-5 the same?
              Greatly appreciate the help.

                Re: Which road to take?

We live in Calgary, and have always been able to fly the 3 of us out for under $1200. We were there in April and got a package on Expedia for $1600 ( including hotel for 10 nights).
I say hold out for cheaper airfare, and check out every option.
                Good luck!

I suggest going on Mapquest.com and typing in the destination. They are pretty good at the best routes!

                      Re: Which road to take?

I know there are some spots through Utah where the posted speed limit is actually 80 on the I 15.

Well there's the High Road, the Low Road or the Road less taken.

The I15 is fine this time of year, and it's shorter.

                          Re: Which road to take?

I don't have any experience with I-15 since we live on the coast near San Francisco, but I do know that if you drive through LA at the wrong time it might take you a couple more hours of traffic going down I-5.

going by I-15 may be worth it to avoid that hassle.
