Safety is at the top of the "4 Keys", and if safety becomes an issue then it takes priority over show. I personally think it's bad show, but I can see how it's necessary sometimes.
The nights when they have to open backstage are nights when I would rather not be in the park anyways... if it is that crowded then I would want to go home so my comment is this... if opening up backstage gets me out of a large crowd and home that much faster then by all means open up backstage! Is it "bad show" possibly, do I care, not in the least.

No... i am dying to see back there, even though I know it's just buildings and such. Never been to DL when it was that crowded, I guess.
Good morning, son
In twenty years from now
Maybe we'll both sit down and have a few beers
And I can tell you 'bout today
And how I picked you up and everything changed
It was pain
Sunny days and rain
I knew you'd feel the same things... sigpic

Good point! It also says alot about the crowds these days. Before I used to see this happen on new years eve but nowadays it is a much more common occurance.
Yes it is, but having been caught in a very scary, complete stand still, human gridlock, with everyone trying to go in different directions, yet not moving for what seemed like five minutes while at Disneyland a few years ago after the fireworks... I would have loved to have walked backstage for an escape.
I'm going to have to vote Nay. Safety is always the number 1 priority, over everything else. If safety is an issue, show takes second seat. It may not be the best show, but it's not bad show.
Our revels now are ended. These our actors, As I foretold you, were all spirits and Are melted into air, into thin air: And, like the baseless fabric of this vision, The cloud-capp'd towers, the gorgeous palaces, The solemn temples, the great globe itself, Yea, all which it inherit, shall dissolve And, like this insubstantial pageant faded, Leave not a rack behind. We are such stuff As dreams are made on, and our little life Is rounded with a sleep. mycroft16 on Twitter
We were there early October. It was not super crowded. After the first showing of Fantasmic we were basically herded out to Main Street, behind the buildings, and out of the park (ther fireworks were getting ready to start). I would have liked to have gone over to Big Thunder but that was not an option.
I wasn't happy about being "cattled" out, but I LOVED seeing some of the backstage area! And boy, there was a cast member every 10 feet or so making sure we didn't take pictures or try to climb something. Felt rather intimidating!
Do you think that this has an effect on children at all since they are the ones that for the most part are trying their best to exercise their imaginations?
I once had this happen to me during a parade while I was heading to the Main Street train station. The CM opened a door in front of me and waved for me to come through the backstage area to get around the crowd. I didn't think it was bad show, in fact I thought it was great because I was able to get back to the train station to meet my family faster. It didn't ruin anything, but there were a bunch of Jungle Cruise boats which made me realize for the first time that the Jungle Cruise is RIGHT next to Main Street. I also got to see something I've never seen before.... the backside of Main Street! Everyone behind me seemed excited to go backstage too, and the CMs kept telling people to put away their cameras and phones and any other electronic device that could take pictures.
So no, I don't think it's bad show. It's better than getting trampled to death, and people like rare opportunities like being able to go backstage.
Is it bad show when GC directs guests through the backstage areas of main street to help the post-fireworks crowd leave the park quicker?
Yes; but this back isle/alley should be fixed up themed and made avaiable allot more and if possible always. Disney has a traffic control and entrance to the parks problem and has had it for years. As they keep adding attractions and shows without adding crowd control the problem is only going to get worse. I believe Disney's crowd problems have been a hands off and out of touch managment that doesn't want to get it's hands dirty.
It's bad show because it takes you out of the carefully themed environment Disneyland does such a good job creating, but it's a necessity, so no complaints from me.

I wonder if the CMs have a protocol that they have to follow when the guests are walking by. There is a major breakroom right along the pathway to to the fire station in which alot of CMs can be seen smoking, eating, taking a nap, and generally making up for all the cursing that they couldn't do onstage.
When we got done watching Fantasmic at WDW, they made us walk backstage. I was almost to the end before I realized I was even backstage. When there is crowds, people are more focused on getting to an area without crowds than looking at the scenery.
Why don't they just have an exit-only gate from Critter Country to the Mickey & Friends parking structure? And either an underground or elevated walkway with moving sidewalks. These 2 locations are not that far apart. It would relieve a lot of crowding on both Main Street and the trams.
