  • [Question] Attractions that make you cry

... And I'm not talking about Snow White when your two years old. I was talking to a gamer friend of mine and we came across the idea of a video game moving you to the point of tears. This got me thinking about the few times I have gotten teary eyed at a theme park.

    First time:
August of 2005 watching the flag retreat on Main Street. Maybe this doesn't count because its not really an attraction, but it moved me.

    Second time:
November of 2006 on "It's a Small World Holiday." We hit the white room at the end and something about it brought a little tear to my eye.

So how about your self? What moves you at Disneyland?

Re: Attractions that make you cry

Well every time I walk through the gate and out onto Main Street USA, I get emotional. It doesn't have to be a special event or anything but it just confirms that I am there...my happy place.

Also any film in the parks that has Walt Disney...instant waterworks. My family will be falling asleep but man, I start tearing up real fast.

I catch myself on many attractions being so happy that I find myself on the verge of crying. Haha, in Disneyland, it really doesn't take all that much for me because I love it there so much.

That is easy.. Snow Whites Grotto made me cry. It is the VERY first movie I went to and me and my Mom went alone together. That movie was so magical... The first time I went to Disneyland after my mom died, I stood there and was remembering that memory, and the wishing well started singing, and I missed her so much in that moment, I just started crying..

That's a really nice story. It sounds like you and your mom had a great relationship.

That is the same for me...just seeing the partners statue makes me tear up because I am grateful for that wonderful man who had such a Big imagination and made his dream come true.

Remember... Dreams Come True. Other than that, usually just memories of Disneyland make me tear up.

                I lol'd.

Anyway, I wouldn't exactly say cry, but the ending of Fantasmic is always moving. It's just so epically awesome.

Re: Attractions that make you cry

The attraction that always made me cry was the tram back to G for Goofy, at the end of an all-too-long, all-too-short day . . .

The last time I cried at Disneyland was when I saw that they had ruined the Monorail, replacing it with one that looked like it should be shuttling people between terminals at the airport. No MAGIC!

I'm looking forward to seeing the new one, even though it doesn't have the pilot's bubble. I was lucky enough to ride up there once when I was a kid. Maybe I will cry again when I see it.

Re: Attractions that make you cry

It takes a lot to make me cry, unfortunately. My brain doesn't seem to like expressing emotion that way, which is sometimes quite frustrating and sometimes a lifesaver. So I don't think I've ever been moved to tears in Disneyland, but the closest would probably be in RDCT, particularly when Walt's opening day speech starts.

If there were a really good Lion King dark ride, that might do it, too. For some reason, that movie gets to me a bit. Lots of memories tied to it.

Re: Attractions that make you cry

For me, I usually feel the sting of tears when they play the Walt quote "to all who come to this happy place: welcome". Parade of Dreams also hit my soft spot (and still does to some degree when I hear the music).

This past summer, whenever I would hear the "Baby Mine" part of Magical I would get a little choked up. That part of Dumbo always used to make me cry when I was little so to see it come to life so vividly was moving.

Finally, on my last night at Disneyland during our vacation last year, when they played "A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes" after the fireworks, I was a goner!

Re: Attractions that make you cry

Like a few have said, Walt's speech in RDCT. Also, I know it's not an attraction at the park, but this summer I went to see "The Boys" and when Dick Sherman talked about his Friday afternoons with Walt singing "Feed the Birds" and he started tearing up, I was done for. I went with four other friends who aren't into Disney whatsoever, and they were goners as well at that point.

Leaving Main Street for the last time at the end of one of our once a year trips.
It's always way too long before we return.

I don't know about "crying" but there are a few things that reach me deep down. RDCT, Christmas Fantasy Parade, falling "snow" after the fireworks, and Believe in Holiday Magic all get me. I think it's because that was the first time I went to Disneyland back in 2004. I know the flag retreat ceremony gets a couple of my friends.

I'd always get emotional when the lights on Main Street turned off and the Electrical Parade started blaring. Great memories.

For some reason the bit of Walt's opening day speech never got me in that way. Maybe because I didn't really like the parade that much.
One thing I have notices is how all of our examples are probably because we are fans of the park. I wonder if casual fans feel the same way about the fireworks or watching snow fall? Also I wonder if an attraction will ever achieve the level of story telling that will make you tear up at the end?

When I was driving to work the other day the DLR holiday commercial came on the radio, and once they started talking about the snow on Main Street I started to tear up because I remembered visiting with my dad when he had injured his knee, and after the snow started falling he decided his knee hurt too much so he gave me and my sister the rest of his fastpasses and let us go on rides while he sat on Main Street for the rest of the night.
