  • [Chat] Is Disneyland Just Now Catching On?

It seems that 2009 brought lots of seasonal events for the year. But is Disney just now catching on to something that Tokyo Disneyland has been doing for years now?

Tokyo Disneyland has dozens of seasonal events. For example in 2010 there is Season of Heart (TDS) and Power of Music (TDL), each featuring their own elaborate shows. In Spring, Tokyo Disneyland is getting a seasonal parade, Easter Wonderland, a new twist on Easter in the world of Wonderland, and in Tokyo DisneySea, Spring Carnival will return for it's 4th year where it operates it's own special parade too. In both park's there are massive Summer shows. During Halloween, Tokyo Disneyland has a special parade that runs twice a day, then the characters, music and lighting switch for two showings at nighttime. And, the Halloween parade changes every year. Tokyo DisneySea also does 2 massive Halloween shows, and Christmas also brings plenty of things. The biggest event is the Christmas Parade in Tokyo Disneyland that also changes every single year.

So why is Disneyland just now starting to dip their toes in the water for these type of events? There are so many possibilities that they are wasting away. Imagine, a spectacular Princess Parade during the Valentines season, a festive floral show in DCA during the spring, two shows for each park in the Summer, elaborate Halloween events, and Chirstmas offerings that change every year? Why isn't Disney doing all of this?

It's really complicated to try to explain, but basically TDL is reliant on those seasonal events and promotions to dive attendance to the parks. Their audience is something close to 90% locals.

As Disneyland's audience is trending more and more toward locals, they too are becoming more and more reliant on these seasonal promotions to drive attendance. They are much cheaper to produce then actual attractions and they have the flexibility of being switched out and changed often (where attractions cannot).

To sum it up: Cultural differences. Market is different. Management is different. All of this and more really do affect how it's all put together.

Really, DL is only missing the Spring holidays - But their flowers, right after Christmas go right into Valentines colors - and there is often a little valentine merchandise, even before New Years. Then the best flowers of the year arrive for Easter and Spring - DL really does have some fantastic Spring floral displays!

the only thing I really wish they would do is an Easter/Spring Parades, and a larger Halloween parade, than what they offer for the Trick or Treat Party in DCA.
