  • News Plaza Inn, Carnation Cafe, and other Dining Locations switch to Plastic Tableware!

Yes Plastic, as in plastic plates and bowls and cups. No longer can you eat at carnation cafe with glass plates, now you can enjoy them on "smaller" non-breakable dishes of different colors. They are somewhat designed, but you can't help but admit this is a downgrade.

    #1 are there any pictures?
#2 does this correspond to either an increase in price or a decrease in portion size?

Just curious, how is this a "downgrade"? Just because they aren't "authentic"?

Not surprising. There's the inevitable cost factor involved, but also the safety factor. These eateries serve huge numbers of people, often in a cement-floored outdoor setting. Breakable dishes do break and people sometimes get hurt. Forks and knives sometimes cause injuries as well. People will do stupid things and then sue the park, so it isn't surprising that this happened.

Declining by degrees. Ruining the theme of Main Street.

Aesthetics help to define the dining experience. The Riverbelle lost a lot of class when it went to plastic. Plaza Inn was always intended to be a cut above the regular fare at the park. This degrades the total dining experience and reduces it to the level of The Hungry Bear or Village Haus.

                      Umm...

it's tableware. I really don't think that is a huge deal, it may be just me...

Not sure about the Plaza Inn, but we ate at Carnation Cafe about 3.5 weeks ago and they were using the new plates. They look like colorful crockware type plates, as if they were actual ceramics, but they are indeed plastic. They are not disposable, just a little more resilient. I asked our CM about them and she said they were ok but the ribbed edges on them made gripping them more difficult and they are a bit smaller in general. We ate at Plaza Inn that same night and they were still using the old plates. Have they switched too now?

Is this a permanent situation/change??? Any official announcement?

Not too long ago, there was a huge thread here on MC about the French Market (supposedly) switching to plastic. It was full of heated responses, speculation and downright threats of refusing to eat there ever again.

The bottom line was that it was a temporary situation caused by excessive crowds and a shortage of silverware. Everything went back to normal in a few days.

Will this thread turn into another 10 pager over pretty much nuttin' too???

In response to the OP, Walt Jr., yes, this is most definitely a Decline by Degrees.

Just another reason to leave the park to eat. Lots of choices on Harbor, and the GardenWalk.

So, if they are permanently sticking to plastic plates, yes, it's a decline by degrees. Yes, it's tableware, is it a HUGE deal? No, but it does matter. If you got a fancy restaurant and the food comes out and it's on plastic plates, you certainly think LESS of the restaurant. Are these supposed to be "fancy" restaurants? Not necessarily, but they definately feel less so now.
