  • [Fun] Steve Martin on returning to Disneyland

From his autobiography Born Standing Up that I finished recently, where he writes about what it was like to come back to Disneyland, where he'd first begun working in the Magic Shop, learning tricks as a teenager years before he started on the long road to stand-up comedy:

Ten years later, after the Beatles, drugs, and Vietnam had changed the entire tenor of American life, I returned to the magic shop at Disneyland and stood as a stranger. As I looked around the eerily familiar room another first came over me, a previously unknown emotion, one that was to have a curious force over me for the rest my life: the longing tug of nostalgia.

Looking at the counter where I pitched Svengali Decks and the Incredible Shrinking Die, I was awash with the recollection of indelible nights where the sky was blown open by fireworks and big band sounds drifted through trees strung with fairy lights. I remembered my youth, when every moment was crisply present, when heartbreak and joy replaced each other quickly, fully and without trauma.

Even now when I visit Disneyland, I am steeped in melancholy, because a corporation has preserved my nostalgia impeccably. Every nail and screw is the same, and Disneyland looks as new now as it did then. The paint is fresh, and the only wear allowed is faux. In fact, only I have changed. In the dream-like world of childhood memories, so often vague and imprecise, Disneyland remains for me not only vivid in memory, but vivid in fact.
I couldn't have encapsulated the deep ache of whimsical Disneyland feelings any better myself. Beautiful.

Wow, beautifully said Mr. Martin!!!! I wish we would all give the "corporation" some credit once in awhile.

That's a great book BTW; the stuff on when he worked at Knott's is just as fascinating, if not more.

I was just going to say that. A very good book and the old tales of the Birdcage theater were even more touching. I highly recommend this book, a very easy read.

I agree with the others; it was a great book and his stories about Knott's were great. It's a great read for those who love Steve Martin, DL, Knott's, or all of the above!

Welcome, Mr. Not-Steve-Martin! Guess you're also not a fellow alum of Garden Grove High School, just a few years ahead of my class of 1974. Not-a-fellow-Argonaut, I take it!

As quickly as I would agree, I would just as soon disagree. Disney the company has done an amazing job of advertising Disneyland the nostalgic experience. However in many cases the legacy of unique experiences have been altered and trampled by the unending march of the merchandised characters. I look fondly on the memories of my childhood, but there is sadness in knowing that my kids may never know the thrill of experiencing something not seen in a Disney movie.

                                    Beyond that, a Pixar-Disney movie.

And yes, the "corporation" has done a good job in preserving at least some of the magic. But no "corporation" can put in as much love and attention as one single person, with dreams and vision to make this all happen in the first place.

I really enjoyed Steve's book, too. He did a wonderful job hosting the 50th Anniversary show that played in the Opera House. Now that Mr. Lincoln is returning, Steve is still playing (I think on a loop) in the lobby on a small screen. Catch it if you have not seen it. Brought tears to my eyes!
