  • [Idea] Great Movie Ride :D

Hey again! Today, I was trying to think of ways DCA could incorporate a Great Movie Ride into the Hollywoodland section of the park so they could relocate Monsters Inc. as Ride and Go Seek in DL (maybe toontown or fantasyland ) and then it hit me. I thought that the track layout of the Monsters Inc ride was inadequate and the tiny showrooms that don't dazzle, so putting the GMR (great movie ride) on the same track wouldn't be a good idea, even if they could combine Millionaire with it. So here is my idea.....the Carthay Circle Theatre

I was looking at maps and realized that the position of the theatre is adjacent to Hollywoodland.

I believe the original plan was to put a show in the building about Walt disney's History, but no offense to Walt because I like to consider myself a reincarnation of him (haha just joking, I'm not crazy), but I felt that this could turn into another Golden Dreams, but I'm pretty ceratin the Imagineers scrapped the plan for this.

So instead of having an empty building, I thought they could relocate the Playhouse Disney show to where Millionaire is, and build a nice courtyard + entrance to the building where that building is currently located. Then they could build a queue starting at a detailed ticketbooth and enter the building and have it themed to a movie theatre lobby and have the room have the smell of popcorn (they could sell popcorn around the building) with intricate movie posters and billboards. Then the guests would enter a preshow in a separate room explaining the journey through the movies they are going to embark on, and then enter the ride with similar themeing to the one in DHS, but with enhanced audioanimatronics.

This is a stretch, but I'm thinking the could retheme the Monster's Inc cars as sleak black limo's again instead of the bulky cars used on the current GMR in DHS. I also thought they could make the cars into EMV to react to the special effects around it like Indy. For example, if it goes throught a scene where there is an explosion, it could jerk in the other direction and if it enters a scene where it goes in a chase scene, it can go along with the ride.

The guests would exit through another lobby, but this one would have the history of the Carthay Circle Theatre (or this could be included in the original queue) but the guests would exist back onto Buena Vista Street, making it the first ride to be incorporated in two lands. I personally like the idea judging I made up half of it on the top of my head as I was typing this .

I don't think DCA would be able to recreate the Chinese Theatre for the ride for two reasons

    1. Space - There isn't enough room by Monster's, even with Millionaire it would feel cramped.
    2. The actual theatre that is STILL WIDELY KNOWN is less than 30 minutes away.

    Tell me what you think!

It is a really ambitious idea, and it seems it though it has some good intentions, but I don't want a clone of the GMR. Keep it at DHS.

Like Rocker, I'm all for it if it's not a clone. But with over 100 years of movies, there's plenty to choose from. I don't know how much they could build behind but with the Trams no lnger there, perhaps there's some wiggle room.

Well it wouldnt be a clone. Thats the point of the EMV vechiles and different movie scenes. It would be SIMILAR, but far from the same

Haha, why not? I'm sure there are plenty usable California films to use. If your not joking (I can't tell because of the text), we would just have to make sure that it isnt overly stressed in the attraction

As a frequent visitor to WDW, I would prefer that Disney upgrade the Great Movie Ride at DHS. But I'm heavily in favor of replacing the current MI ride with Ride and Go Seek. If they want their MI attraction to be a major draw, they should seriously consider it. As it is, the ride has tepid popularity.

So in your idea, would the entrance be in the Playhouse Disney building and the exit in Carthay Circle? Or the other way around.

I could see it work if Carthay Circle acts as the exit to the attraction and a history of the theater. So people off of BVS could enter as well as GMR guests could exit.

DCA needs to add some classic Disney attractions and GMR would be great. I like the EMV idea, but I said on a different thread that it would be a unique idea that instead of having a life tour guide, like at DHS, they could have screens next to every seat like on SuperstarLimo/Monsters Inc. That in itself would change it up from the DHS version... If not an actual GMR, they definitely need something that captures the classic feel of Hollywood. GMR just makes the most sense to capture those emotions.

And if you were planning to have the entrance at the Carthay Circle... I don't think that would work. Whatever ends up being in that building needs to be either something about Carthay Circle Theater, Walt Disney, or something that introduces the entire park. Something more general than an attraction based on movies, which would only introduce Hollywoodland.

                        Re: Great Movie Ride

In my opinion the GMR is one of the most boring E-ticket quality rides Disney has ever created. It's impressive in its scope and quality, but the experience ends up being something that leaves a lot to be desired. It's creepy like a wax museum and it doesn't take you into its own fantasy world, that you want to be in, like the best Disney attractions do.

I think a version of something like the Dick Tracey Crimestoppers ride or a Muppets ride set in the 30's-40's period would both fit the new theme and be a lot more fun. There is a lot of cool things that could be done with the idea of Hollywood besides just showing movies we've all seen before in 3D.

GMR, when it was released, was incredible. If Disney was to put in a new revamped version of the GMR, I would be ecstatic. However, it would need unique qualities that make it part of DCA and the selection of movies should focus on QUALITY films

IMO, now it's kinda creepy with the out of date AAs that look like they could be in the Rainforest Cafe. Tarzan scene? It's horrible!

It used to be a classic, yet I still have faith a nice refurb and replacement of a few scenes would make it a classic again for me.

Why would DCA's hypothetical version only need movies set in California? I really don't get this! A large majority of great, great movies are made in Hollywood, but not all are set in California. :/

What if the OP's new DCA attraction was so stellar they clone some scenes and effects in a redo of TGMR at WDW.

The Great Movie Ride in Disney's Hollywood Studios is basically what the title suggests. You board massive "theater-esque" vehicles that hold way too many people as it slowly creeps through massive scenes from the movies with animatronics. (think pirates of the caribbean but with famous movies like Gone With the Wind, Mary Poppins, Wizard of Oz, etc).

There's also a host or hostess that narrates your way through the movies and also has a scene where they get lost or kidnapped and someone else takes over. It's kind of an embarassingly bad scene and the guides I've had were never fully into it.

I like the idea of having the ride start in Carthay and taking over the Clubhouse Disney building, but in the same token, that would mean more fake facades in this new "hollywood" since the building would be taken up.

The Disney Animation building already creates a fake facade at the edge of Hollywood Blvd so I wonder if doing this in the front would be a good idea.

I DO like the idea of having a ride start in a theater just like it does in Florida, and perhaps they can fix the facade issue by having the ride exit into a museum or space of Disney movie props and costumes... almost an attraction in itself.

The ride would most certainly need to ditch the "moving theater" style that is used in Florida and do something more intimate and smaller, allowing more scenes to be added. I vote for either golf cart style vehicles seen on many backlots that can hold up to four persons, or fancy movie theater seats on wheels. No host or hostess. Just a "ghost host" kind of thing.

A Hollywoodland without a 'great movie ride' doesn't feel right. And I agree... No clones! But this would just be a variation with top of the line animatronics and plenty of new movies to immortalize.

I'd also be happy with losing Playhouse Disney entirely. No show should stoop that low to people's intelligence.

I agree with Cohete that the ride vehicles could be less unwieldy, and more scenes could be added. Also, some of the AAs could be upgraded. I happen to like the host or hostess, though, because the host interacts with some characters in the movie scenes. To me, that brings a more exciting element than just some disembodied narrator who announces what movie you're currently riding through (the Ghost Host works great for the HM, however).

I think reasons for me not liking the tour guide was mainly due to the size of the vehicles in WDW. They're massive, they're long and that's what she said. By the time I finally saw one scene, the narrator was already talking about the next scene. Definitely a downside to sitting in the back.

Smaller more intimate vehicles would deem a tourguide unnecessary. Unless they did jungle cruise size vehicles, I can see that potentially working but I'd still prefer not.

I like my rides better when human error isn't a factor. I prefer Jungle Cruise have skippers but more often than not, I'm disappointed.

The hostess last time made the ride so much better. I've seen GMR, but the hostess added some flair and dialogue I didn't remember. Makes the ride repeatable.
