  • [Question] Best Disneyland Decade

since this decade is coming to a close, i got to thinking:

what decade do YOU think was the best for Disneyland?

just curious to see what you all will say

      Re: Best Disneyland Decade

I don't think I'll have an answer regardless, but just for clarification: are we talking about the best decade for new additions, or the best decade for the park as it existed as a whole?

The ultimate dark rides (POTC and HM), the ultimate Tomorrowland, a brand spanking new NOS, Mine Trains and Pack Mules, studio animators offering free sketches, the original Golden Horseshoe Review, it's gotta be the 1960's.

Maybe because I was looking through the magic of my Childhood, but my favorite decade was the 1980's.

You still had a lot of Walt's ideas in the park, but a resurgence of technology to bring about rides like Star Tours. Later in the decade things got bad, but for the most part you had the best of the new and the best of the old combining to make a really magical experience!

              Re: Best Disneyland Decade

I'm going with best 10 year period, not calendar decade...

              1959-1969
Matterhorn, Subs, Monorail, NOS, POTC, HM, IASM, 67 Tomorrowland... it was the Golden Age.

              For calendar decade... the 60's.

60's, but that might be for the whole company as well.

                    I'm going with the 60's too, with the 70's a close 2nd.

                        Re: Best Disneyland Decade

Does '59-'69 count? 1959 had the openings of Monorail, Matterhorn, and Subs, while the next ten years through 1969 had the openings of Pirates of the Caribbean and the Haunted Mansion.

In that case, I'd probably vote 1985-1995, or the 1980s if I have to stick to a calendar decade. That certainly wasn't the most phenomenal time for new additions, but the whole park has probably never been better. It was before Pressler-era neglect and poor decision-making really settled in, and all of the currently existing classics were already there or were built during that time.

But most of you seem to be responding to the other interpretation of the question. If that's what we're talking about, I'd probably pick the 60s, or the '59-'69 decade mentioned by others. That's a harder decision, because a lot of great stuff was built throughout the park's first four decades ('55-'95), but that time period was just so saturated with the construction of essential Disney attractions.

I'll be criss-crossing the calendar too and say 1976-1986...I loved the bicentennial stuff like AOP, and everything that came after...Disneyland at its peak.

                              '50s
Because Disneyland was created during that decade.
As far as DCA is concerned, I'm hoping this wasn't the best decade.

Generally wouldn't one view the decade they were a child as the best for Disneyland? I know I do, even if no one else agrees.

Well...yes and no. I think for most people, the first ten years in which they visited the park are indeed going to be the most special - I know they are for me. But I don't think those were the ten years that saw the most improvement to the park, or the ten years when the park was at its best.

I certainly don't think so. Toward the end there, sure, but the 90s was full of excellent parades and shows that basically came out yearly. What, we had Parade of Dreams for what, 4 years and people were whining how stale it was. Wanna know why? Because they were spoiled by the 90s.

                                      Grumble.... grumble....

I would choose August 1969 through August 1979.
