  • [Question] Matterhorn Lift Hill Air Conditioned?

So while perusing a 31-year-old copy of "The Disneyland Line" (an internal cast member publication), an article on the "New Matterhorn" had a picture of the lift hill, and a caption describing how it was insulated to keep the cold air in. I don't remember noticing the cold air in there. Is it still air conditioned? Was it ever? I just don't recall ever thinking, "ooh, it's nice and cool in here".

Considering the huge holes that were in the sides of the Mountain to let the Skyway Cabs through, it would have been difficult to keep any air in.

I never remember it being stuffy or muggy inside as we were going up the first hill and once the ride got going, it wasn't warm at all!

it's been a long long time
but it did seem like there was a bit of cooler air there.
      I think.
Also, wasn't there lights that made it appear like hail was falling (or something like that)???

Re: Matterhorn Lift Hill Air Conditioned?

I'm just guessing here, but I doubt if it is air-conditioned, in the truest sense of the word.

More likely it's cooled by the 'evaporative cooler' effect. In areas of low humidity, (it's in the single digits around here a lot), we have devices we call 'swamp coolers'. These are fans inside of a metal box about 3' X 3' X 3'. The air is drawn in through fiber like pads that are soaked with water. As the air passes over these pads, it is cooled. A lot. Then it is blown out of a vent into the building.

It's common around here for it to be 100 degrees outside, and have 60 degree air from the cooler. The only drawback is that the air is very humid. And if you're on city water (I'm on a well), it'll smell like chlorine. YUCK!!

In an semi-outside area, like the Matterhorn, I doubt you'd feel the extra humidity much. But you'd certainly feel the coolness.

BTW, a swamp cooler costs about 1/10th as much to run as an A/C does.
