  • Space Mountain Question...

How long was it down? I always thought it was some crazy long time, like 5 years. But my roommate swears she rode it on Oct. 2003, which would mean it wasn't down very long as all.
So, when did it go down? TIA.
    Good morning, son
    In twenty years from now
Maybe we'll both sit down and have a few beers
And I can tell you 'bout today
And how I picked you up and everything changed
    It was pain
    Sunny days and rain
I knew you'd feel the same things...

Suddenly and overnight, I really don't think so, when I was at DL in Dec of 02 I was told that Space Mt. would be down for about a year and a half for a make over. I was not told of the shut down date as it was not set in stone as of that time, but the fact is that people knew what was in store for SM.

It closed months before it was scheduled because the thing was finally ridden into the ground, completely. Go Paul Go!

            Re: Space Mountain Question...

Yes a shut down was planned for Space, but it came earlier than anyone had expected as a result of unforeseen mechanical problems.

The ride broke one day and they decided then and there to keep it closed rather than fix the problem. So it was sudden and overnight.

I take that back...not unforeseen mechanical problems, ignored mechanical problems.

                Re: Space Mountain Question...

                ^^ Correct.

I had the privelidge of riding SM on it's final day of operation in April 2003. Woke up the next morning and BAM ... closed.

I think it was scheduled to close Sept. of '03, but like was said above, got moved up a couple of months.

I stand corrected, I did not know that it was shut down early, just that it was to be shut down.

I believe you are absolutely correct. It was scheduled for the refurb after the summer season '03 and was to remain down until the 50th. Then during a routine maintenance in April '03 they found cracking in the track and structure and decided to shut down immediately and start the refurb early. I almost forgot about it missing the '03 summer.

                          Re: Space Mountain Question...

The above information is indeed correct. Space Mountain had a bad habit of breaking down a lot for several years before the closure. For me, Space Mountain was "closed" for about five years--three years of visits when SM happened to be closed, and two years of the refurb. And I still haven't experienced the new Mountain...
