  • [Chat] How do you feel about Hollywoodland?

There sure has been a lot of complaing about the name Hollywoodland lately.

I feel that something a lot of people don't know is that the original Hollywood sign actually said Hollywoodland.

I personally really like the name. I think its a nice homage to Hollywood's past, and cleverly also works with the "_____land" formula.

So, how do you feel about the name?

I like it for the same reasons you stated. It ties well with the 1920s/30s theme that they are aiming for, and I also think that it sounds classy. I am hoping that if they redo the area in Phase 2, it will become much more classy and romantic.

Have people been complaining about the name? I hadn't noticed. I actually like it for the exact same reason...I hope they go through with it.

I was generally against the name when it was first proposed, but I think I prefer it against the Backlot name. For the reason posted in the OP, it really sounds like it should be interesting.

I personally don't like it. It sounds like a cheap tour through L.A. There is a reason they changed it on the big sign

Actually I heard that the "Land" portion of the title just fell off and rotted away. Who knows there's a bunch of stories floating around all over the place.

I personally like the name, it kind of gives it a feeling that makes me think of Ride and Go Seek at Tokyo Disneyland. I don't know exactly why, it just does lol.

it feels redundant to me, can't we just call it hollywood? (actually that might be a stupid question)

Parts of the sign deteriorated in the 1940s .. but not the "land" part. You're thinking of a film or two .. where the "land" part is obliterated by an explosion. And if I remember correctly .... Disney's own film: The Rocketeer has it's "bad guy" crash into the "land" section to make parody of it.

The sign was called "Hollywoodland" to reflect the name of the real-estate company: Hollywoodland Realty .... to sell homes in the hills.

The sign was not intended to be up for no more than a couple years .... but it quickly became an icon .. and was left up there.

So from 1923 to 1949 ... 26 years .... it kept the full name, and was lit up at night .... However in 1949 a commission was put in place to repair the worn out sign .. and the commission wanted the sign to reflect the district and not real-estate company .. by stipulating the "land" part be permanently removed.

But by today's historic point of view ... there's a unique mystique with it's original full name. Forget the fact it was a reference to "Hollywoodland Realty". It's part of history that people knew it as Hollywoodland for a QUARTER of century. Right .. during the heyday of Hollywood.

And since Walt Disney Plaza is going to reflect Hollywood of the 1920s .. with a new partners statue of a young Walt, with Mickey .. .and Walt did arrive in Hollywood in 1923 .... the exact same year the "Hollywoodland" sign debuted.

So ... it would be fitting ... that even if they don't call the area "Hollywoodland" ... for the sake of getting history right ... the surrounding theming should reflect the original name. Not the name that was given in 1949.

Re: How do you feel about Hollywoodland?

Actually the Sign was rotting away till the early 70s when they worked to restore it. Celebrities sponsored letters and that's when they restored it. The "Land" was taken out a few years after the sign was put up because people just started calling the housing development "Hollywood".

The origional Sign was made from Sheet Metal and Telephone posts (Which is mainly why it rotted away.) Today the sign is made of Steel (I beams Planted in the ground) and Sheet metal, which makes it kind of hilarious when they say the sign is going to burn when there's a wildfire.

I think it's a great name for the land. If you don't know the sign's history, then you'd thing that they just added land after "Hollywood"

i loved the idea many moons ago and love it now..and the Disneytwins assesment of the signs history is right. and for those that think Hollywoodland is a cute way of adding land to a title like Carsland(retarded as all get out for a name)you dont see the area around Screamin called Paradise pierland do ya? no you don't... one question though they currently play a lot of semi modern music though out the park i imagine that will change . it would be weird to be walking down a 20s-30s era Hollywoodland and hearing the beach boys little old lady from Pasadena playing over the loud speaker

When phase 2 of all these changes to DCA begin .... I wonder what they'll do with the end of the street here:

I wonder if they'll paint this area to resemble the Hollywood Hills ... and stick the "Hollywoodland" sign here. And keep the entrance into the Hyperion theater a little more to the right.

I think some sort or recreation of the sign .. in view of the new "Partners" statue would be very fitting.

As I said ..... the sign wore out into the 1930s and 40s .. where finally in 1949 .. work was done to repair it. Then again in 1978. This time .. with more durable materials to last a lot longer. And the "land" part was there for 26 years. Not a few.

                                The Hyperion Theater.
I just now looked on bing maps ... and if you walk dead center into it ... that's the dead center of the theater itself.

So .. it just bares to question .... will phase 2 have the entrance of the Hyperion "centered" so we see that at the end of the road? Or will they do a large scale painting like they did here ... that shows the Hollywood Hills?

And when I say - large scale painting ... I'm not talking like what they did in Toontown.

But a painting ... that comes off as "a painting". (Not an attempt to create a "mock up". That would look way too silly and out of place with the surrounding buildings.

But maybe there's some "creative way" to paint a section of hillls ... with the "Hollywoodland" sign ... large enough to see ... at least mid way .. up the street.

i think they should center the theater entrance. and do a painting of the hills with Hollywoodland above it..and it would still look good from the partners statue

I'm pretty sure that it would be hugely difficult technically to center the entrance of the Hyperion. The main tech booth is dead center on the ground floor and the handicap elevator is also in that main block section. You'd have to completely structurally alter the building. I'm pretty sure it's not worth it. Most theater's of Broadway size have entrances on each side and the control booth in the middle. It's a pretty standard set up. If they were going to do anything major like that I would much prefer if they moved the balconies back and pushed the stage a little bit behind the proscenium. That way when you sit in the balconies you couldn't see directly down the traps and it wouldn't ruin the effects as much. If they could also alter the degree of the incline that would be great. I get vertigo trying to walk down the stairs in the balcony because it's so steep. And a not so major change that they should do is putting escalators or conveyor belt style escalators in instead of the 2,000 steps. And putting a roof over the waiting area.... OK, that's my wish list for the Hyperion makeover. Now don't get me started on the show inside of it.
