  • [Idea] Armchair Imagineering: Space Mountain Tron Overlay

Heres an Idea that occurred to me the first time I rode on space Mountain after they removed the ghost galaxy overlay...

How about a Tron Legacy tie in that would go in temporarily to tie in with the new movie?

The line would be redone with some references to FCom and ENCOM, Video Screens could have some back story.

the main launching hangar is lightly re themed to represent a "Lab" with a digitizing machine to transport you into the digital world.

re errect the projection surfaces they had for ghost galaxy (and more perhaps?)... the first main uphill (Launching tube) could be re done with a "Digitizing" effect. and once you come over the hill you've entered the digital world of tron, images of the skyline of tron city projected on the dome. recognizers float over head, etc... until the first drop when we are introduced to our nemisis. much like some of the sequences in ghost galaxy, projections of a light cycle start chasing you as the track, now lined with glowing effects, takes you through a high speed chase, augmented by music and the voice of the villan driver of the chasing light cycle taunts you... (jeff Bridges as Cloo?) Projections show the competing light cycle running right along side your vehicle, bouncing over and or under you... leading up to the end where you see the opposing cycle in front of you and then crash (Augmented by the existing photo flashes" thus deressing the villan and de-digitizing you back into the real world...

Certainly wouldn't want to replace the original, but a fun way to re experience a classic in a way that would serve the disney branding machine!

I don't really think anyone around MiceChat will take kindly to "serving the Disney branding machine". Its a creative idea though.

From the way you've described it, basically it's redoing the ride to have guests enter the world of Tron, and be immersed in a light cycle race through the mountain? It's a really cool idea!! I would love to fly through the mountain racing side by side with the light cycles. But I agree with Noski, and it does somewhat cater to the marketing side of it. I really would like to see this though! From the previous two overlays, (Rockin' SM, and GG) this would potentially be my favorite.

As a temporary overlay, I'd be prepared to give it a chance.

The good thing about Ghost Galaxy (and even Rockin', whose guts I hated quite passionately) was that it was an original idea. No movie tie in- original, just like Space Mountain. I really don't want think a movie overlay of any kind would work just on principle. It's a nice idea, but I just don't think Space Mountain should sacrifice itself to Tron.

So what happens if WDI were to do this and god forbid, it would be successful. What would be next? Would Matterhorn get UP characters and will Grizzly River Run get some Rapunzel characters? This would open the worst can of worms.

I can't understand your point unless you were completely agreeing with what I said.

Oh no I completely agree with you. When I was referring to WDI it was not intended to you but at Imagineering.

All Branding aside, the thought popped in my head particularly because I LOOOOOOVED Tron as a kid, and really cant contain my excitement for the upcoming "Legacy"... (Hope they dont screw it up...) and that said, had fond memories of the speed tunnel sequences of the PM... So really this is more inspired by my own geekery and wanting to enter the world of tron more than anything else...

as for "dont fix what aint broke," I agree, once again, I only imagined it to be temp, or seasonal. As to "Would they rebrand the other rides?" well we do have jonny Depp in POTC now, so its already happening...

But, I feel like the way SM was set up after their rennovation, it is probably the most logistically conducive to interesting temp over lays... and I still kinda feel like it would be in line with walt's vision.

My understanding was that we got the elephant bathing pool in Jungle Cruise because he wanted people who had been on the ride before, a new experience to come back for...

                        Ah. Okay.

Should it happen though? I personally like the "plussing" of Pirates, but that is even more fitting, because the movie was based on the ride. Tron isn't even remotely along the same lines as Space Mountain.

Maybe Walt would like it. But once again, they aren't even remotely close in theme.

And you are right, we did get overlays to come back for, but the elephant bathing pool has no movie tie-ins, it does fit with the theme of the attraction, and it blends in seamlessly. What you imagine for the attraction is a complete temporary re-theme, which in my humble opinion, is wrong, and it's a good thing it's never happened on an overlay before. The Haunted Mansion is still a Haunted Mansion for Haunted Mansion Holiday, it's a small world is still a small world for the holiday, Space Mountain is still a space station for Halloween, and Tron doesn't even have an excuse to take over Space Mountain. I really like your ideas, but try to create a new ride or a show as opposed to taking up a beautifully themed Space attraction.

That's why I like the idea...entering one of the coolest "worlds", racing with the Light Cycles through space.

Yea, thank god we didn't get Eddie Murphy in the HM...

I can see that...the ride works really well with adding things around the "blind" turns. And you're right, basically in the words of Walt, "Disneyland will never be completed as long as there's imagination left in the world". Sadly, WDI and TDA think imagination means putting their guests through movie based rides.

Personally I would love to see the interior of SM lit up in neon or LED and TRON would provide plenty of justification to do it. It would be a nice change if atleast for awhile we could see an updated version of the glowing rockets and perhaps the track outlined in light as well. Let's face it.. for this to happen these days you almost need to sell the idea of branding to the execs to get a budget these days.. I'm just sayin.

Well, Space Mountain could definitely do Tron justice. But my issue is that Tron wouldn't do Space Mountain justice. Like I said, not the idea, but the principle of forcing a new theme from a movie on Space Mountain.

And to MainStreetJake... weird. Great minds must think alike.

Okay, just to address the movie tie in, (And to play devil's advocate)

Walt launched the park with the disneyland TV show,
the tommorrowland show basically explored the future application of technology. and was mirrrored in the park...

Adventure-land was originally "True-life Adventure land" to tie in with the True-life adventure shows and documentaries...

and frontierland was almost completely a vehicle for Davy Crockett

Most movie tie ins are good- F!, TSMM, FLand dark rides, Splash... people seem to forget these because of the vast amount of attractions Toy Story or even Pixar as a whole are getting. I love this idea- but I think a Tron makeover should be done on another TLand attraction (or ex-attraction): The Peoplemover tracks.

Re: Armchair Imagineering: Space Mountain Tron Overlay

Leave Space Mt. as it is. It already draws huge lines, and sits around the top of many peoples favorite ride lists.

Ive worked with both sides of the movie tie in argument for different concepts and as it stands, rides that exist well in themselves should be kept as they are, without a tie in, while a balance of new rides with tie ins and "original" concepts are built.

Instead of trying to put in an overlay, why don't they explain why my rocket contines upward slowly after it blasts off?

It does sound like an Idea I was going to post(but I am just so lazy and buzy, didn't have time to post it.)
It does sound good, the changes you would have to do would be with the queue(with what you just mentioned with Encom refs), the loading area(with the rocketship being a scanner and the screen being a hugh computer moniter), the soundtrack on the rockets, the upward lanuch tunnel(doing the digitizing effect of scaning people into the game grid), ETC. This temporay overlay could be called Computer Space Mountain Thru The World Of Tron.
