  • News When will it be busy at Disneyland - 2010 Edition

Welcome to the 2010 version of “When will it be busy at Disneyland”.

So, the question gets asked, when will it busy, is this a good time to go to the park, etc.

While we don’t claim to have a crystal ball here at MiceChat, there are some times that you may want to avoid if you want to avoid the crowds.

Whenever the Deluxe pass is blocked-out it will be busy.

The parks are generally in high-capacity mode when Deluxe AP's are blocked out. You can see Deluxe block out days here. http://disneyland.disney.go.com/disn...utCalendarPage

Whenever the SoCal pass is NOT blocked-out on a Sunday.

Expect in influx of SoCal AP's. You can see SoCal block out days here.
Disneyland Resort&reg - Annual Passholder Blockout Calendar

Other days to watch out for SoCal passholders is the last Sunday before they are blocked out for the summer. This would be June 27th. And also the first Sunday they are allowed back in. This would be August 22nd.

This might not be as big of an issue as in years past due to the payment plan. People are using the payment plan to get the SoCal passes and now it's quite possible that a Saturday in July will be less busy than a Sunday in October.

    During the Disneyland 2fer Deal

As of now, there is no news on when the 2fer deal is running. We will update when this is released.

    During Spring Break

Spring Break times run from Mid-March to the end of April. Couple that with the 2fer and you have a busy park.

During any major convention in Anaheim

You can find all convention information here
Welcome to the Anaheim Convention Center

Conventions are always subject to change and I would check the events link to make sure. Anytime a group takes over the “Entire Facility” or Arena or multiple halls generally means it’s a big convention.
Here are some of the major ones.

January 14 through 17 – NAMM (National Association of Music Merchants)
January 24 through 27 – CHA (Craft and Hobby Association)
Feb 13 through 15 - USA All Stars & College Nationals Dance and Cheer Competition
March 10 through 13 - Big West Basketball Tournament
March 20 through 22 - American Showcase National Cheer and Dance Competition
March 26 through 28 – United Spirit Association All Star Nationals
March 27 - The Great Bridal Expo
April 16 through 18 – Anaheim Comic Expo
April 30 through May 2 – Orange County Boat Show
May 21 through 23 – Home and Garden Show
September 8 through 11 - The 4th Annual Not Back to School Days Rally and Conference

We will add listings for the 2nd half of 2010 once the scheulde get's closer.

But as you can see, there is pretty much something ALWAYS going on at the convention center. Which means for people who have to travel, they will bring the family who will spend time at the parks while Mom or Dad is at a convention.

    During Major Disneyland events

Disney's California Adventure Food and Wine Festival (April 16 through May 31)
The weekend of July 17th (It's on a Saturday this year)
Disneyland 1/2 Marathon Weekend - Labor Day Weekend
Gay Days weekend - Generally the first weekend in October

    Around Holidays

    MLK Weekend
Valentines Day Weekend (Valentines Day is on a Sunday AND the Cheerleaders are in town)
    Presidents Day Weekend
Easter week (week before and week after)
    Memorial Weekend
    July 4th weekend
All of July and most of August
Labor Day weekend (but usually the least crowded of the holidays)
Columbus weekend (increasingly busy the last few years)
    Veterans Day weekend
The week before and through Thanksgiving weekend
From the week before Christmas and through the first weekend after New Years
    Weekends in December

    Disneyland Parking Problems

As has been well documented here on MiceChat, Disneyland is experiencing some problems with having enough parking spaces on certain days. You can find more information in the link below:

Fiasco to Park at the Parks - What can be done?

As to why this is happening, an informative post by "Darkbeer" is linked below:

    http://micechat.com/forums/3391525-post75.html

So what to do when it's busy? Get there early. Take it slow. Have fun.

    The Number Scale:

As you will see on the next pages, many days are given a "Number Scale" as to how busy it "might" be. Remember, we are not psychic, but we do try and give you an idea based on our experience and past attendance patterns.

    1-2: Rainy Days
These are the lightest of the light. If you don't mind dealing with the rain, those are the best days to go. Some rides will be closed, but crowds will be VERY low. Expect wait times to be less than 20 minutes, even on the E-tickets.

    3-5: Off-season weekday
If you don't want to deal with the rain, Off-season weekdays are the other good days to go. Some rides may be closed for refurbishment. Expect wait times to be less than 40 minutes. Note: Some school districts have odd-days off, so some off-season weekdays may be busy.

5-8: Weekends and Spring Break Weekdays
Weekends during non-holiday seasons and Spring Break Weekdays can REALLY fluctuate. Due to the 2-fer, most weekends until July will be busy. Generally the best weekends to go are early september through early october. But now with the Halloween festivities and the AP Payment program, this may not hold true so much anymore. If you will be going during Spring Break, weekdays are your best bet, but it may still be busy. Expect wait times to be 60 minutes for the bigger E-ticket attractions and low capacity rides.

9-10: Holiday periods and Spring Break Weekends
These are the busiest times of year. Examples of such busy times are Thanksgiving Weekend, Week between Christmas and New years, Weekends in December, July 4th Weekend, during big convention periods. Expect wait times to be AT LEAST 60 minutes for most attractions, if it's warm, water attractions can get up to 120+ minutes.

No, I don't mean that it's too busy.

Re: When will it be busy at Disneyland - 2010 Edition

clinky, there were some conventions last year that Disney allowed parking in its lots, which, naturally, exascerbated the parking problems. The NAMM comes to mind, being on MLKJr weekend, and a more-than-typical number of conventioneers driving every day instead of staying overnight.

I wonder if there is some way to know this in advance instead of getting a Darkbeer or Al Lutz update about the past week's problems.

Can you specify the months of the "off season."

I had no idea such a thing still exists?

Rembember too a lot of schools in California have the week of President's day off completely for a "winter break" or ski week.

Weve been coming down with the kids the last 4 years and for the most part, Ive found sometimes there is no rhyme or reason why there will be crowds or no crowds. I guess though to me its pretty much always busy, we came down in September this year, did a random Sunday-Tuesday, and even though the crowds werent packed, it was still "busy" in terms of the number of people.

I remembered the Disneyland trips of the 80's and early 90's. It was always the same routine, hit the park early in the morning, pretty much see what you want to see then head back to hotel for lunch and a swim. In the evening, grab some dinner and head back to the park and by the nightfall after the electrical parade/fireworks the place was empty. I can remember a weekend in 1991 just riding the Matterhorn multiple times in a row because nobody was there in line.

Now that just doesnt seem like it will ever be again, maybe its passholders, who knows but in all the trips weve done in the last few years, Ive never seen it anywhere close to as empty as I remembered. Sure there are some times you can walk right up on Pirates, but thats about it.

And what I found on my trip in September, is that even though there arent as many people, there arent as many workers either, so the only half the lines are open in many cases, so the wait times in some cases are the same as they would be if it were crowded.

Like the original post says though, the rain can clear some things out, also nights where there is no Fantasmic seem to be an emptier park, or at least a less all congested into 2 areas park. If you really want those times back where you have the run of the place, it likely will never happen, but rainy season mid week in Jan or Feb probably might be the closest you will get. The best scenario is when they expect it to be busy with all lines working, etc and it turns out not to be that busy, that is when you can get some pretty short lines.

Whenever 80% of kids are in school, that is "off-season."

No. It is the "Program." Passholders are simply doing what the contract allows.

I honestly think the only Off-Season days anymore are rainy days.

                        We can certainly try.

Honestly, with Disney's parking issues I can't imagine they will be leasing out their parking anytime soon.

Well, that one convention will be pretty hairy if there isn't enough parking for all of the delegates at the convention center. It might be a "gameday decision." Hopefully, the NAMM people are encouraging carpooling.

W00T! a 2010 thread. Any inkling of what kind of crowds i could be looking at march 3-6? I chose wednesday through saturday so that the first timer i'm taking can experience 2 slow days and 2 busy days. I see there isnt a major convention planned that week. would 3-5 be an appropriate guess?

Wed and Thur should be nice 2-5. Fri will get busier: starts as a 4, by dnner time it should be a 7. Saturday is a 7 all day.

Hey all--new to posting but a long time site fan. My family is planning a 5-night 6-day trip to stay at the Grand Californian sometime in May, June, July, or August of 2010. Any suggestions on what would be the least crowded time to go? I've read a lot on here about the effect of APs and the days they're blocked out, and about the effect of the new World of Color show at DCA, but it's all left me a bit confused about when to hope for the lightest crowds. Thanks!

First: World of Color will not affect crowd levels as much as it will crowd movement.
May, early June (away from Memorial Day weekend, though) are your best bets.
Summer will depend heavily on economic situation. Pleasant crowds last summer were caused by too few tourists showing up on blocked out days when they are expected.
Crowd levels' variance has lowered a lot in this past year.

i didn't think thanksgiving week was as busy as expected to be, but that may have been my opinion and the fact i've never seen space mountain to be less than an hour wait
