While I have learned to accept most of the new additions to IASW (excluding America), this holiday season I found that the attraction has been hit hard with even more doses of commercialism that I find a disgrace to the season.
The Mermaids of the South Seas now sing once again, but only with an obnoxious rendition of Part of your World trying to run their voices over. To add insult to injury, the mermaids are hardly moving their mouths at all. The Swiss singer was left broken for days, The russian dancing dolls are broken once again, and the Bells in the Hello Room have lost their ring.
In fact it seems that Disney got the fantastic idea of adding new renditions of their classic Disney tunes for the holiday version of It's A Small World. New Songs include the Unbirthday Song for Alice and a new song for Pinocchio. New keys are included for Cinderella and Aladdin.
However, what the brilliant designers failed to realize was that the songs wouldn't be coordinating with just the Small World theme song, but with Jingle Bells as well. The result is hilarious as Disney Characters fight with the rest of the attraction, trying to get their melody's to be heard over Jingle Bells.
It's obvious that you can get a song to mesh with one other, but not with two. It worked alright with the regular version, but not at all with the Holiday version.
The Volume's are horrendous, with Part of Your World literally stomping on the poor mermaids who have just gotten their parts back.
On top of it, the beautiful lighted canopy for the South America room has been altered in order to allow for better viewing of the Disney Characters at the end of the room. Lost is the beautiful canopy of lights, and the balance of the sequence, now it looks like something big is missing. Boy is it big, its an entire holiday bell tower.
Tagging It's A Small World with disney characters and songs may have worked while it was just It's A Small World.
But now Disney is trying to coordinate It's A Small World, tagged with Christmas Decor and Song, while holding on to Disney Characters and song. The result is a disaster, It would have been nice to have the Disney designers think that the music of the holidays were more important then slamming their Disney music once again, unfortunately Disney isn't that global minded.
Disney just needs to find a happy balance, like leaving the Disney Music alone for the Holidays while they are already juggling three songs, Small World, Jingle Bells, and Deck the Halls.
