  • [Fun] Tales of Disneyland

I recently got a book titled Mouse Tales: A Behind-the-Ears look at Disneyland. It is wrote by David Koenig. The book contains many fascinating stories about Disneyland. It gives examples of jokes/pranks CM's use to do, park disasters, angry guests, and silly situations. I am curious to hear other stories from my fellow MC'ers. Your story can be about anything that occured in Disneyland. It can be something you experienced personally or something you heard on the news or anything for that matter! I shall start:

An operator phoned a gullible Inner Space hostess and claimed to be the "guy from refrigeration." He had told her that the snowflakes in the ride were melting and he wanted her to keep checking the temperature of the room. She told the guy that they were only made of styrofoam, but he convinced her that they were frozen on the inside. He called her all through out the day to check up and advised her to send any guests who complained of getting wet to First Aid. (This came from the book I mentioned above and is supposedly true.)

    Mmkay, well, here's another story:
It was a CM's last day working at Disneyland and she was working on Mission to Mars so she decided to redecorate Mission Control. She threw potato chip bags and empty coffee cups everywhere. She also redecorated the AA's by putting sunglasses and hats on them

Near 3:00 am one Grad Nite, one of the train conductors had just finished his final shift before pursuing another career. To celebrate his last day, he donned a pair of flowered bathing trunks and spent some time in an inflatable raft, floating around the Brontosaurus Pool in the Primeval World Diorama, sipping a tropical beverage with a tiny umbrella sticking out jauntilly, his Wayfarers glinting in the lights.

Most of the grads on the trains steaming past were either too bleary-eyed, or making out, to notice the surreal time-traveller...

Some of my favorite stories are from my co-author Dave who used to work on the Keel Boats. I was riding with him once when he stopped the Keel Boat near Tom Sawyer's Island - just before that last bend that takes you by the Mark Twain. There was a young boy, probably 10, who was on the edge of the wooden dock that used to be a fishing dock. Dave pulled the Keel Boat a little closer to the dock and called over to the boy to come on out to the boat, the water was only a foot deep. He dug into his pockets and drew out the change. Offering it to the boy, Dave told him he would give him the 35cents and a free ride on the boat! Needless to say, the boy didn't accept Dave's generous offer.

Dave said the Keel Boat drivers also knew a trick with the boat and its rudder that would send a wave of water over guests standing on the edge of the Island. Never got to see that trick!

          Wow! Good stories.
I read in a book that Tiny Kline, the girl who use to play Tinkerbell during the fireworks, actually got stuck in the air! They had to call the Anaheim Police Department to get her down and apprently she could have quite a temperment. She had always ask if she could fly down the line by her teeth, but Disneyland always refused to let her.

It is also said that Michael Jackson would visit the park a lot, but he got very tired of girls following him around so he created a disguise. Cast members said his usual disguise consisted of a hat, surgical mask, surgical gloves, and a wheelchair. It apparently worked a few times! One castmember said he once crawled out of his wheelchair and into the Peter Pan car. It upset her because he was holding the line up. The car returned after flying through Neverland and he said, "I wanna go again!" (This story was also found in the book Mouse Tales: A Behind-the-Ears look at Disneyland. It sounds kind of outrageous)

I like the story in that book about the rats and roaches inside the Blue Bayou. How they have to sweep the roaches out and take the dead rats out of the water. That's cool.

I found a story that could be it. On Pirates of the Caribbean cockroaches are a problem. They like the dark, damp, and warm environment. They keep appearing despite regular fumigation so CM's usually have to sweep them off the floors of the boats before opening the ride in the morning. Yuck!

I read that book on my flight home from California this past summer. I bought it at Downtown Disney. I really enjoyed reading it! I also read the sequal, More Mouse Tales, which I recommend as well. I now want to see if there is a book like that about WDW!

I used to work in Cash Control and one of our many jobs was collecting and counting the coins in the Wishing Well. The coins collected in a round metal basket that was just below the water level and padlocked to the well in two notches in the side of the well. You would lean over the edge and reach down and unlock the locks, unless you were new and unaware.
The story told to the newbie was that you had to get into the well to unlock the locks, so off came the shoes and socks of many a new cash control teller and in they went. It was so hard to keep a straight face and not laugh until they were in the water.

I know that Tom Sawyer's Island used to have a HUGE rat problem; when they used to sell snacks over at the island, they had to bring back all the trays of un-sold brownies at the end of the day because the rats would eat through the cellophone and eat all of the nuts on the top of the brownies if they were left out!

At least the Disneyland Cat Population keeps the Disneyland Mice Poplulation down (sorry Mickey and Minnie...)

Whenever they drain the Rivers of America, the rats cross over from TSI into the Park in droves...

...and, they are planning on draining the Rivers after the first of the year!
"I've got the heart of a child..." - I keep it in a box, next to my bed...

In the book it said that some CM's once captured a rat near Splash Mountain and put it in a glass case and they told everyone that it was Mickey Mouse's friend! Hehe. They later got in trouble for it. :P

it did say that they would put out cyanide laced hot-dogs out for the rodents nightly and when they would go to drink the water from ROA they would die. The morning crew would have to skim out the dead, floating creatures every morning in and around ROA. It was a great way to control the rodent population until a kid found one of the hot-dogs and ate it. That's why there is a such a large population of cats.
