My picture threads consist of images I have taken that focus on the architecture, landscape architecture, planning, design, and theming of the facilities highlighted. They may also contain short descriptions and commentary, but will not focus on construction progress or special events or memorabilia or food selections or my traveling companions. Hopefully these threads are a good introduction for those who have not seen these places yet. All killer, no filler!
Golden State photographed in December 2008:
The most realistic-styled land in the park can be further divided into three or four subthemed areas that focus on regions of the state. This land is the gateway that guests must traverse to reach a bug's land and Paradise Pier beyond.
Condor Flats:
This area celebrates the Mojave Desert region and its history of aviation innovations.

Soarin' Over California:
The main attraction of Condor Flats is this large-format film attraction, viewed from rows of motion-simulator seats that raise up to suspended positions within the theater while guest's legs dangle. The sensation of glider flight is synched with the travelogue-style aerial footage of the state in the film. It is housed in an immense hangar-themed show building.

Taste Pilot's Grill:
Another hangar in Condor Flats houses this nicely detailed restaurant.

Grizzly Peak Recreation Area:
Another area of Golden State is themed to the forested mountain ranges of the central and northern areas of the state. Adjoining this area is Disney's Grand Californian Hotel at the border of the park, its woodsy Arts-and-Crafts style a good complement and backdrop.

Grizzly River Run:
The major attraction of Grizzly Peak Recreation Area is this raft ride that twists around the features of Grizzly Peak, a fantastic rocky setpiece that celebrates the geology of the Sierra Nevada range as well as an ode to the state's extirpated symbol. This is one of the few major attractions at a Disney theme park that can be circumambulated (the Matterhorn Bobsleds in Disneyland is another) and every angle is well-designed.

Redwood Creek Challenge Trail:
This contained children's play area is composed of several loops through woodsy intimate elements and a small outdoor show amphitheater. It is not especially innovative but beautifully realized. Its also refreshing to see a modern play area that contains plenty of obscured sightlines and adventure spaces where kids can explore and get 'lost' rather than a wide-open arrangement.

Pacific Wharf:
This third area of the land is focused on dining, with restaurants and several food demonstration attractions themed to Monterey Bay' Cannery Row and the Northern San Francisco Bay wine region; in fact, the Wine Country Trattoria can be considered a separately themed subarea.

Enjoy!
