  • [Idea] Nightmare Before Christmas - Darkride

Is it just me or does anybody else hate the Haunted Mansion Holiday?

It's not that I don't hate the Nightmare Before Christmas characters. I think they are all fantastic characters and I love the film. But the fact that they take over a Disney classic for 1/4 of the year.

What I am proposing is make a darkride for Nightmare (which I know has been proposed by other posters before) in the Hollywood Pictures Backlot (Hollywoodland?) in DCA. Possibly taking the place on Monsters Inc. or another soundstage in that area.

Both Haunted Mansion and Nightmare Before Christmas have big fan bases. And when Disney already has two casts of animatronics and figures for both why not have them both be permanent. People are always talking about how DCA needs more darkrides...

    What do you think?

    It's just you.

Seriously, though, I like the idea of a separate Nightmare Before Christmas ride, but I don't have any problem with the HMH as it's currently configured. Our family likes being able to see two different Haunted Mansions depending on what time of year we go.
Now don't close your eyes, and don't try to hide...

Next trip to Disneyland: December 3-6, 2011. I can't wait!!!

I like Haunted Mansion Holiday a lot but I wouldn't really care if they became two seperate attractions. Plus HMH keeps Eddie Murphy out of the regular mansion.

Re: Nightmare Before Christmas - Darkride

I like Haunted Mansion Holiday but I think it is getting a little long in the tooth. A Nightmare Before Christmas darkride could be very cute but I don't know how well a ride with Christmas in its name would do year round.

I'd like to see Disney pack up HMH and send it to WDW for a few years. Then they could haunt the Jungle Cruise at Halloween and do the long proposed Christmas show for the Tiki Room. It's good to shake things up from time to time.

Re: Nightmare Before Christmas - Darkride

I understand the part about a classic being taken over for 1/4 of the year, but the setting is too perfect for Nightmare Before Christmas. It's not something they could replicate in DCA.

I personally think part of the magic of the ride is that it takes place in the same show building and basically transforms the entire mansion.

It's basically the same as saying why not have Fantasmic! have it's own ampitheater? It all has to do with the magic of Disney. Guests would rather see NEW attractions/shows in familiar places, trust me.

Re: Nightmare Before Christmas - Darkride

Fantasmic would of had DHS' amphitheater if it had enough room. It would alleviate traffic issues and bring peace back to the rivers. God do I miss the riverboat at night

I think with DLP and MK's Haunted Mansions, they'd be foolish to take them out for 1/4 of the year. DL and TDL are okay, but they should just build the dark ride and here's my thoughts:

They should build a Halloweentown miniland somewhere in DLR (maybe where the ranch is) and have that be holiday headquarters when Oct-Dec rolls around. Include the proposed darkride and some snack and beverage stands. Nothing huge, but NBC is too wildly popular to pass up.

noo i think a Nightmare ride in hollywoodland would not fit the theme at all. i dont have any problem with the haunted mansion overlay. and nightmare before christmas is a christmas/halloween movie. a permanet dark ride for this fil would not make sense in any land or any park. it is right at home in the haunted mansion.

Re: Nightmare Before Christmas - Darkride

Until HMH stops seeing the 60+ minute waits it gets consistently day after day (while the regular mansion can only amount to 30 at best [unless, y'know...capacity]) it ain't going anywhere. I'd love to see a Xmas version of the Tiki Room (holiday layovers really are like getting new attractions now, aren't they?), but if that won't happen unless HMH leaves sometime soon, it has a greater chance of seeing a hurricane hit Kansas.

And even if the 60-minute waits died down, you still have the Nightmare merchandise which sells like crazy! HMH is here to stay for a long, long time...

It couldn't be any less thematically appropriate than Monsters Inc. AND it's a huge Disney franchise. Not to mention much more unique than any other Disney film ever made. So just the fact that it's a "set apart" Disney film makes it more fitting than another Pixar film, in my opinion.

I agree, because of the popularity of the franchise, it needs something year round. That's mainly the bottom line. And I like the Halloweentown idea, but I feel it would fit in a park that is looking for a bit of an edge, and not to mention a widely popular ride. Like DCA and DHS in Orlando.

At all costs, keep Mr. Murphy away from the Mansion.

I agree... there is a type of magic of familiar places completely transforming right before your eyes in a way that hasn't been done before. But not on a large scale production like Fantasmic. Yes, DL's Fantasmic is my favorite of the two, because of Peter Pan, new dragon, etc. But I saw DL's Fantasmic first and I much prefer DisneyWorld's Fantasmic! Amphitheater. It's more organized, I like sitting down, the magic is still intact, I like sitting down, I kind of like that it's a nook in the corner of the park, and I like sitting down. I might actually enjoy it more if I'm comfortably sitting down... but no question Disneyland's production part is much better.

A good example of unexpected attractions and shows in familiar places would be Tiana's Showboat Jubilee, parades, that Toy Soldier procession in DCA, etc.

As I said above, bottom line: Nightmare Before Christmas is a huge, unique franchise that could pack in crowds year round, not just for the holidays.

--Maybe I just have never like any of the Holiday overlays. Not one. Ghost Galaxy, HMH, SWH (Although I do love those lights. It's better than the attraction itself). But obviously, by the look of this thread, I'm alone on this.

Re: Nightmare Before Christmas - Darkride

First off, I love the Nightmare Before Christmas. And by love, I mean the day the special edition came out I watched it three times in a row. That being said, at this point there really isn't a place in either park where it would thematically fit. So for now, I'm fine with it being in the Haunted Mansion between Halloween and Christmas.

I'm happy with how it is now.

WDW needs this more than we do. Give them Halloweentown with a full fledged Nightmare Before Christmas dark ride and many other attractions. Give me something worth while to visit on the other coast.

the whole point of the DCA renovation is to make the park better and give the lands better themes the damage is done with monsters inc ( even though i enjoy the ride) so why would you want to take away even more from the 1930s 1920s theme of hollywood land by adding nightmare before christmas?? it may be a "huge" franchise but a whole ride dedicated to a sesonal movie would be a bad idea. can you really think of a land that a christmas/halloween movie would fit in? the haunted mansion is the perfect temporary home for this movie

Fantasmic wasn't designed to be stuffed into an amphitheater. Take a look at the original concept art - the setting is the RoA. The amphitheater/sports arena environment is the worst part of the F! at DHS, it detracts from the magic of the show. If you want to ride the riverboats at night there's plenty of time to do that when F! isn't playing (mon-thurs during the off-season usually).

Maybe I got wrong info then. Personally, I've never seen the concept art and only heard my info from an old DLand CM friend of the family.

But when you go as seldom as I do (once a decade) you kinda want to just be there when your favorite atractions are still your favorite atractions and not a special thing that really caters to those who get to go multiple times a year.
even if thats once a season thats 4 times a year and you can see all the different phases of the park in a year but if you only have one shot like me I personally like to see it the way it should be.
